(No Model.) v l I. A
v E J.. H. TIFFANY.
DRAFT ATTACHMENT EOE VEHICLES. No. 381,183.
Patentedpr. 1*'7, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE., j
' JOHN H. TIFFANY, oF DIMOCK, PFN'NsYLvALNIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LetterslPatentNo. 381,183, dated April 17,1888.'
` Application mea June 1s, naar.
y To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatl, JOHN H. TIFFANY@ citizen of the United States, residing at Dimock, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DraftAttachments for Vehicles; andl do'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make anduse the same. y t V My invention relates to means Afor adjusting A.and balancing a cart-or other vehicle; and it 'consists in` the combination, withk the body of avehicle and the draft appliances, of an attachment connecting the said body to the draft,
so as to raise the front end of the vehicle when too low and -loweritwhen too high and adjust it at the proper position by the draft of the team and tension of the harness.
It is illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations, and Fig.; 3 a plan.Ln t
I haveiuustrated thisinvennion as @minedw to a class of vehicles for.whch I obtained Letters Patent Nos. 297,876 and 308,933, of 1884. In the drawings, A represents the top ofthe body or frameiof the vehicle; c, the bottom; B,
YThe top and bottom draft rodsor chains, J"
and K, must be of a proper length, so as to draw on them all at the same time when the vehicle is adjusted or balanced properly or at the desired angle with 'the'tongue When the front end of the body is low, as shown in Fig.
2, the draft will be from the bottom rod or chain, which will raise-the front end ofthe vehicle, and the upper adjusting device will be loose, as shown.` .When the front end of the body is too high, thev draftwill be from the top, which will lower it. Y.' The tensionvof. the
When rods are used,` pivoted tothe body of the veserial N0.241,1o1. (No mbael.) i
kharness Vupon thetop or'jblottom of the body is the same as the draft of the team, as before explained, and helps to adj ust and kbalance it'.y
N represents a springof elastic wood, metal, or other material, used tol lconvey the weight of the 'thills, f tongue, Hneck-yoke, or other' weight from the team tothe vfront end of the l Y body or frame of the vehicle. The spport orfulcrum'of'the spring should be near the point `where the tongue unites withthe vehicle. i
The spring tongue-support herein vshown yand described is made the ,special subjectof f' my application No. 267,830, tiled March 2 0, 1888.
When the frontend ofthe vehicle is low, as f I ,shown inFig. 2, the tonguesupport`-doesnot 1 convey the weight of thetongue, '&c.,tothe .f v
frontend of the vehicle; but about thetilne the vehicle comes to a horizontal position or at a desirable anglewith the tonguethe springsupport transfers the' weight of the thills or tongue, whiffletrees, harness, `or .other weight carried by the tea-m t o the front end of the vehicle, which`tends to prevent `the front end of the vehicle from rising -too,high,wherebythe Vehicle is better adjusted at the desired posi- Y tion. thus to prevent the thills or tongue rising, so
I 'donot confine myself tothe formof springV herein described; but any form of support that will relieve the weightv of the thills or tongue,
whiffletrees, neck yoke, harness, and other height and will not materially interfere with the team when the frontend of the vehicle is high will be comprised by my invention.` I y do not wish to Vconne myself to the draft-rods or chain-adjuster as before described, but to include any form of draft-adjuster to draw Another'object of thefsprin'g-support is i 8O as to interfere with the team when `the front weight from the team and 'transfer it to 'the l frontend of the vehicle when at the proper 90/ fromk the top kand. bottom thatl will adjust andi' balance the vehicle. Iamlaware that it is old'to tongue-supports on wagons; but Il am not aware that a springsupport has been usedywith a cart or other vehicle adjusted and bal,-Y .anced in' manner and by the means herein described. f i
What I claim is i use spring i 1. In combinationwith the body of avehicle the top and bottom of the body and to the 1o and the draft appliances, an attachment con- Whiietrees, substantially as and for the pursisting of rods, chains, or cords connecting pose described. the said body to the draft, whereby the body In testimony whereof I aiix mysgnature 1n 5 is balanced by the tension of the draft upon presence of two witnesses.
said attachment, substantially as described. JOHN H. TIFFANY.
2. In combination with a vehicle-body, the Witnesses: t tongue, and elastic tongue-support, the Whif- Jos. H. BLACKWOOD,
fletrees, and the adjusting device attached to vW. G. DOOLITTLE.
