B.H.JPUR-DY.
- GAR BRAKE." v No. 381,084. x Patented Apr. 10, 1888.
- UNITE STATES 1 PATENT I OF ICE.
ELBRIDGE H. PUItDY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
CAB-BRAKE..-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 381,084, dated April 10, Jose. Application filed October 20, 1887. Serial No.252,908. (NomodeL) v I '7 To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE H .-PURDY,
' of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
. While capable of application to street and railway cars generally, my'in-vention has been especially designedand is here shown adapted for use upon cars employeduponthe ordinary city and suburban cable tramway.
Itconsists, essentially, of a pair of jaws so coupled to each other, and one of them so con-- nected to a lever or hand-wheel under control of the carman, and the two jaws having such relation to the slot-flanges, that they are capable of gripping the said tlanges with force sufficient to stop the car. j
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a vertical section of a cable car having one of my brakes represented in its normal or inactive condition. Fig. II represents the same brake in action. Fig. III is a plan showing portions of truck-frame-and platform. Fig. IV is a perspective view of the brake proper. Fig. V is a section at the line 1) c. Fig. VI is a side elevation showing certain details of the ratchet mechanism. I
1 may represent the track-rails, and 2 the slot-flanges, of acable tramway.
3 and 3 may respectively represent portions of the truck-frame and platform, 4 one of the truck-wheels, and 5 and 6 the housing and hand-wheel, respectively, of a cable car grip mechanism. v 1
6 may represent the grip ratchet-wheel, 6.- its retaining-pawl, and 6 the releasing-pedal with its retracting-spring 6 My improved car-brake is constructed as follows:.-A hanger, 7, permanently attached to and extending downward from the truck frame 3, affords journal-bearing for the upper jaw, 8, of my brake proper. The operating- 7 surface 8' of this jaw is slightly eccentric to its pivots or journals 8 The contour of the said jaw is further such as to keep its under .surface parallel to and slightly elevated above the crowns of the-slot-fianges 2 in the normal condition of the apparatus. (See Flg. I.) A 5o spur, 9, that extends upward and rearward from said jaw 8, receives one end of a steel cable, 10, whose other end is secured to-the stem'll of a hand-wheel, 12, in convenient position for manipulation by the carman. A ratchet-wheel, 13, upon the stem 11, and a'corresponding pawl, 14, pivoted to the platform, 7 enable the brake to be heldto any desired tension. 16 represents the under jaw of the brake proper. The said under jaw is so suspended oo from the said upper jaw by a link, 17, asin theinorma'l condition of the apparatus to hang beneath and just out of contact withthe under side of the slotflanges 2, (see Fig. I,) and so I as, when the device is brought into action, as 6 I shown in Fig. II, to coact with the said upper jaw, 8,'in tightly gripping'the slot-flanges 2.
The brake-operatinghand-wheel may be-located at a distance from the ordinarygripwheel, and its stem may consist of asimple 7o rod; but its stem llis preferably tubular, as shown, and sleeved, around the grip-stem 15; I or the said brake may be operated by a lever engaging in a retaining segment-rack similar to the reversing-lever and segment-rack of a 7 5 locomotive. I
I claimas new and of my invention'-- 1. In a car-brake, the combination,withthe slot-flanges of a cable-conduit," of a pair-of linked grip-jaws, 816, connected by cable 10, I
withhand-wheel11 12, ratchetwheel 13, and
pawl 14, as and forthe purpose set forth. 2. In combination with the brake proper,'8
16 17, the cable 10, and the grip-operating stem 15, the tubular hand-wheelstem 11, sleeved 8 5 around said grip-operating stem, as set forth.
3. The combination of brake proper, .8 16-17, I 5
the cable 10, the tubular hand wheel stem 11,
"and the grip-operating stem 15, within said tubular stem and terminating in ratchet-wheel o 6, having the retaining-pawl 6", the releasingpedal 6', and the retracting-spring 6 as set In testimony of which invention I hereunto set myhand. e
