CORN-SHELLER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,767, dated April 1888.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that l, SAMUL GARVIN PILLS- BURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island, inthe county of Phillips and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn-Shellers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in corn-shellers; and it consists in a device for stacking the cobs after they have passed through the operation of shelling 'and are discharged from the Sheller.

After the corn has been shelled from the cobs, if the latter are allowed to drop down from the dischargeopening, they will soon accumulate in such quantities as to render the operation of the machine diftlcult. To obviate this trouble, carriers have been heretofore attached to the machine, under the said dischargeopening, and the cobs are conveyed by this device to a distance and piled or stacked. The machinery for operating these carriers is often cumbersome, rendering the operation of the sheller very difficult; and it is to dispense with all unnecessary friction that I have invented the herein'described device, whereby the cobs7 as they pass out of the dischargeopening of the Sheller, are struck by the wings of a revolving fan, which is operated by very simple means, and thrown to a distance sufcient to prevent them from interfering with the operation of the machine.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a corn-Sheller of any ordinary form, having the usual interior construction,where by the ears of corn being passed in at one opening are shelled, the corn dropping into a receptacle under the device, the chaff being blown away by suitable fans, and the cobs discharged through an opening,B,in the front end ofthe machine. This is all of the ordinary construction and arrangement, and need not be herein described in detail, as the same forms no part of the present invention.

G designates the base-plate of my device, which is secured on the front of the Sheller, so that the opening or slot Htherein aligns with the opening B, through which the cobs are discharged. rlhe said plate G is provided below the lower side of the opening B inthe Sheller with the forwardly-extending arms I I, provided with bearings in the ends. l

K represents a shaft journaled in the said bearings, which are aligned, and on one end of the same is secured the baud-wheel L', which is preferably much smaller than the band wheel E on the shaft of the fly-wheel.

M designates the fan, secured on the shaft K, between the bearings, the said fan comprising the wings N N, disposed radially from the shaft asa center. The fans are constructed with the radial arms nmdisposed in pairs,and the transverse-bars n n', secured at the ends to the said radial arms. The wings are thus open and offer but little resistance to the air when rapidly rotated.

The band-wheels E and L are connected by the belt or band O, so that when the shaft carrying the ily-wheel is rotated the shaft carrying the fan M will be rotated at a much greater speed, owing to the fact that the wheel L is much smaller than the wheel E.

The operation of the stacker will be obvious from the above. As the cobs-are discharged from the opening B,they fall upon the rapidlyrevolving fan M, the wings of which strike the cobs in Succession and throw them from the machine. 'Thus the cobs are piled or stacked without any trouble t0 the operator ofthe Sheller, and the resistance offered by the skeleton fans is so slight as to be almost inappreciable. There is no` complicated machinery necessary to operate the stacker, audit may be applied t0 any Sheller now in use at a Very slight expense, as the Same is very simple.

Having thus described Iny invention, I claiml. The combination,with a corn-Sheller having a discharge-opening, B, in its end, of the plate G, secured to the body of the Sheller, a fan mounted on said plate below the dischargeopening B, and means for rotating said fan, substantially as set forth.

The combinatiomwith a corn-sheller having the dischargeopening B and the bandwheelEattached to one of the revolving shafts of the sheller, of the base-plate G, secured to the Sheller and having the outwardly-projecting arms I I, provided with bearings in the ends, the shaft K,mounted in the said bearings, the band-wheel L on the end of the shaft, the band or belt O connecting the said band-Wheels E and L, and the fan M, secured to the shaft K between the bearings, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specied.

3. The eombination,with a corn-Sheller having the discharge opening B and the bandwheel Eattached to one of the revolving shafts of the sheller, of the base-plate G, secured to the body of the sheller, and having the opening H therein to align with the opening B,the

arms I I, secured to the said plate and having bearings therein, shaft K,mounted in the bearings and having the band-wheel L on the end connected to the band-Wheel E by the belt O, and the fan M on the shaft K, comprising the radial arms n n, arranged in pairs, and the transverse bars o1. n', secured at the ends to the said radial arms, the said fan being arranged below the discharge-opening B, whereby, as the cobs drop therefrom after having passed through the sheller, the wings of the rapidlyrotating fan strike the same, as and for the purpose liereinbefore specified.
