Description

(No Model.) 8 J. G. WILLIAMS.
GAR GOUPLING. K No. 380,709. PatentedApr. 10, 1888.
meme@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. WILLIAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK F. WILLIAMS AND MARY M. WILLIAMS, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,709, dated April 10l 1888.
Application tiled July 12, 1887. Serial No. 244,116. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN G. WILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements on the car-couplingv for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 326,188, were granted to me on the 15th day of September, 1885; and it consists of certain improvements in the drawbar head for more rigidly attaching the automatic coupling devices, and also in providing such draw-bar head with a heel or shoulder to butt against the car-body frame, in case of a heavy concussion of cars, for the purpose of preventing breakages, .all as will be more fully hereinafter described, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of a box-car with the invention applied; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the drawebar with the coupling parts attached, and Fig. 3 a plan View of the drawbar.
Corresponding letters in the several figures ofthe drawings designate like parts.
A denotes a box-car, and B the draw-head. This drawhead B, I provide with a vertical heel or flange, a, that with a heavy concussion of cars will form a stop or shoulder limiting the movement of the draw-head and forming a broad bearing-surface that with striking against the end timbers of the ear-body will prevent the rapid wear and tear of such tirn bers.
Between heel a and its front end the drawhead B is recessed in its top face for inserting a plate, C, and another recess isformed in the bottom face of the draw fhead for placing therein plate C in a manner that both plates C and C are on parallel positions vertically in line with each other, and these plates C and C are secured in their relative positions by screwtbolts D, passed through both plates, one
at each side of draw-head B, and tightened by nuts d, and against the side faces of the draw head are formed semicircular recesses c, for the shanks of the bolts. D to be embedded therein.
' Upon plate C is mounted frame E, the up,- rights of which are secured upon the ends of said plate. F represents the movable plate provided on each end with a notch into which the uprights of frame E iit, thus forming the guides for said plate. This plate C is provided with a central opening for the coupling-pin G. This coupling-pin G is formed with a collar or flange, H, abutting against the under face of plate F. The upward extension of pin G is passed through a hole in plate F, and is secured into the hub of a bifurcated head, G', in which a pulley, L, is mounted. A chain, M, is passed under pulley L and then over pulleys N, one mounted in each upright of frame E, and thence through eyes O, secured to the car, the chains being prevented from escaping by suitable rings with which they are provided and by which they may be operated.
l. As an element of an automatic car-coupler, as described, the draw-head lB, provided on top and bottom faces with notches for insorting plates C C and on its sides with notches c, for embedding the shanks of clamp-bolts D, all substantially as set forth, for the purpose described.
2. As an element of an automatic car^coup= ling, as described, the draw-head B, provided on its top and bottom faces with notches c, for inserting plates C C on its sides, with notches c, for embedding the Shanks of clamp=bolts D, and with heel b, all substantially as set forth', for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I altx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
