ALVIN WOODMAN, OF MARYSVILLE, NEYV BRUNSVVIOK, CANADA.
LEASLFORMING MECHANISM FOR WARPlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,641, dated April 3, ,1888.
Application filed January 3, 1867. Serial No. 223,195. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALVIN WOODMAN, of Marysville, county of York, and Province of New Brunswick, Canada, have invented an Improvement in Lease-Forming Mechanism for Vv arping-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspec-ification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In the process of winding yarn from spools or bobbins upon beams for use in looms and otherwise it is customary to introduce between the warps at proper intervals what are known as lease rods or cords.
The object of this present invention is to facilitate the separation of the warpor to lift one and then the other half of the warp for the insertion in succession of the lease-rods. To accomplish this I have mounted or arranged the dents of the leasingrod on two bars, the alternate dents rising from the two bars. Cooperating with these two dent-carrying barsare lifting devices by which the attendant of the machine may lift either bar at will, according to which half of the warp it is desired to lift. The lifting devices herein shown consist of plates having horns or tappets so placed that when the plates are turned in one direction one horn or tappet will lift one bar and when turned in the opposite direction the other tappet will come into position to lift the other bar.
My invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with two bars, each provided with a series of leasing-dents, and a guide for the said bars, of avibratoryliftingdevice having horns or tappets to act upon and lift the said bars one at a time, substantially as will be described and hereinafter claimed.
Figure 1 in front elevation represents a sufficient portion of a warping-machine to enable my invention to be understood, the apparatus being broken out centrally to save space on the drawings. Fig. 2 is a right-hand end view of the parts shown in Fig. I, both the dent-carrying bars being down. Fig. 3 by full and dotted lines shows the same parts, but in two different positions, the full lines showing one of the bars elevated to lift one-half the warp preparatory to inserting a lease-rod; and Fig. 4. is a partial top view enlarged to show the two rows of dents, the heavy black spots showing the leads between alternate pairs of dents.
In the drawings, A represents part of the side frame of a warping-machine,of usual construction, and rolls a a therein, over which the warp passes, all as usual. The frame-work has secured to or forming a part of it suitable guides, e in or between which are placed the two bars b a, each bar having attached to it one-half the dents used, the bar I) carrying dents b, and the bar 0 dents 0', alternate pairs of dents having between them, as usual, at about midway their length, lumps of lead or solder, as 8, (see Fig. 1, or as shown by heavy black spots in Fig. 4,) which act upon those of the warp-yarns which are to be lifted above the other warp-yarns when the reed containing the leaded dents is lifted.
The dents connected as at 8, Fig. l, are in operation the equivalent of those shown in United States Patent No. 325,284, and, if desired, may be made as the dents in the said patent.
The guide-frames a a holding the bars I) 0, contain bearings for a cross-shaft, (I, having attached to it at or near each end a lifting device, e, composed, essentially, of a plate having two horns or tappets or arms, as 2 3, of cam shape, the horn or tappet 2 acting, preferably, upon a foot-piece, 4, preferably of sheet metal, secured to the bar 0, the bar I) beingprovided with a like foot-piece, 5, to be acted upon by the horn or tappet 3.
The plate or lifting device, herein shown as attached to the right-hand end of the rod d, has a handle, e, which may be grasped by the operator when it is desired to lift one and then the other bar I) c to form a shed for the insertion of a lease-rod.
The handle in Fig. 3, full lines, is turned to the right, causing the bar a to be lifted, but if turned into its dotted-line position, as in said figure, the bar I would be lifted.
The handle has an attached spring or latch, 6 which cooperates with a spring or other bar, e, to serve as a locking device for the handie, so that it will remain in the position in which it is left by the attendant.
Prior to my invention I am not aware that the lease-forming dents in a warping-machine have been placed in two rows, one half the dents on one and the other half the dents on the other bar, means being provided to lift either bar at will.
I claim- 7 1. The two liftingbars b 0, each provided With dents, as b 0, and guides for the said bars combined with a vibratory lifting device ar ranged at each end of the bars and each having the horns or tappets 2 and 3,to respectively act upon and lift the said bars, substantially I as set forth.
2. The two lifting-bars b a, each provided with dents, as b c, and guides for the said bars, combined with a vibratory lifting device arranged at each end of the bars and each'having the horns or tappets 2 and 3, to respectively act upon and lift the said bars, and with a handle and locking devices, to operate substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name 0' to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALVIN WOODMAN.
