Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM BECKWITH, OF GRASS LAKE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRIMMING OR CUTTING BOLTS.
Speciiication forming partei' Letters Patent No. 37,9 I3, dated March 24, 1863.
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, HIRAM BEoKwITH, of Grass Lake, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Implement or Device for Trimming or Cutting Bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, making a part of this speciication, in Which- Figure l is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, an edge view ofthe same Fig. 3, a detached side view of one of the levers pertaining to the same; Fig. 4, a face or edge "iew of Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indica-te corresponding parts in the several iigures.
The object of this invention is to obtain an implement of' simple construction which may be used for expeditiously cutting or trimming oii" the ends ot'screw-bolts close to the nuts.
The invention is more especially designed for trimming oit' the bolts of carriages, but may be advantageously employed in other work.
The invention consists in the employment or use of two cutters applied to two levers and combined with an eccentric or cam attached to a lever, all arranged in such a manner as to effect the desired end.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a bar constructed of metal and of any suitable dimensions. This bar is of slightly taper form, and it has a slot or mortise, a, made through it near its thickest end, in which a short iiat bar, B, is tted loosely. This bar B serves as a link to connect a bar, C, to an eccentric or cam, D, which works against one side ofthe bar A. The bar C is attached at its back end to the bar A by means of a screw bolt or pivot, b, which passes through a projection, c, attached to A, and the lower end ot' the link B is attached to the front end of C by a screw boltl or pivot, d, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The eccentric or cam D is formed at the end of a lever, E, which is equal in length to the bar A, and the link B is attached to it by means of a bolt or pivot, d.
F is a spring which is interposed between the bars A C, and has a tendency to keep the bars A C distended or forced apart. This spring may be formed of a iiat piece of steel with a hole or mortise made through one end to admit ot' its being fitted ou the projection c, as shown in Fig. l.
In both of the bars A C, in the adjoining edges of the same, there are made semicircularrecesses e e. These recesses extend entirely across the bars, and are directly opposite each other, so that they will form a complete circle when the bars A C are brought in contact, and in each of said bars, at one side, there is inserted in a `dovetail groove a cut-ter, G. These cutters are ot' steel, and are made of plates ot' a suitable thickness fitted tlnsh in the sides of the bars A C opposite the recesses e e, and having their cutting-edges formed by a basil, f, at their inner sides, so that the cuttingedges g will be in line with the outer edges of thel bars A C. (See Fig. 4.) From this description it will be seen that the bars A C operate as levers as well as the lever E, which is connected with the cam l). The implement is used by grasping the bar A and lever E and applying the bars A G to the bolt, so that the end of the same may tit in the recess c of the bar C, and then pressing or forcing together the lever E and bar or lever A, whereby the cutters G G are made to cut the bolt. By this arrangement a good leverage power is obtained, which admits ot the work being done with the greatest facility.
The cam D is a simple means of transmitting the power applied to the lever E to the bar U, and the implement may be constructed at a small cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bars A G, provided with the semicircular recesses e c and cutters G G, in combina tion with the link B, cam D, and lever E, all constructed and arranged as shown to form a new and improved implement for the purpose specified.
IIIRAM BEGKW 1TH.
