Beit known that I, J oHN SABOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boyertown, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles for Sad- Irons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of polishing or smoothing irons which have removable handles.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of this character adapted both for ordinary laundry sadirons and tailors7 irons.
In the drawings which illustrate the invention, Figure l is a side View of the sad-iron complete. Fig. 2 is a side view of the handle alone. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the iron-block, as shown on the line xx, Fig. 5. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the iron and handle. Fig. 5 is atop view of the iron-block, and Fig. 6 is a bottomview ofthe handle.
The iron-block A may be of any desired shape or design. It has on top a recess, b, which serves,before the top plate, C, is secured, for the insertion of a handle by which the block may be held while it is being polished or ground. .The top plate, C, is secured on the iron block by rivets or screws c, or in any other suitable way. This plate has a slot, d,which is reduced in width at its center by a ange, e, at two opposite sides. The greater breadth of the slot at each end d is only sufficient to readily admit the two inclined lugsfon the bottom ofthe handle. Each of the center flanges, e, is inclined on its under side, as at e', (see Fig. 3,) the thinnest part of the flange being adjacent to the broad end d of the slot and from thence inclining to the thickest part. It will be seen that in the present instance the thickest part of the center flange, e, is at its centerthat is, midway between its two thin endsand thus a reverse inclination is produced, affording an advantage hereinafter pointed out.
The top plate, C, is provided on its upper surface with two straight ribs, g, one at each long side of the slot d. These two ribs receive the base-plate of the handle between them and serve to give the handle steadiness when it is in position on the iron. This top plate also has a downward rim-flange, h, which is provided with scallops, holes, or notches h in the edge which is in contact with the iron-block,
to reduce to thc minimum the metallic points of contact with the iron-block A, and thereby prevent the conduction of heat from the said block to the top plate. The rim-iiange lz forms a recess or airspace, t', between the top plate and iron-block, and said air-space serves as a non-condnctor and prevents the top plate from becoming very hot.
The hand-grasp part J of the handle is made of wood or similar poor conductor of heat. A metal wire or rod, lc, passes through the handgrasp to each end upright, l, and a base-plate, m, connects the two end uprights. The bottom surface, m', of the baseplate is dat and rests upon the upper surface of the top plate, C, between the two straight ribs g. This bottom surface is provided with a central longitudinal stern, n, having two laterally-projecting inclined lugs, f-one at each side-which will first enter one of the broad ends d of the slot d in the top plate, and then take under the inclines e of the flanges e, and thereby the handle will be connected with the iron.
A lever, O, has a pivot, p, connecting it to the base-plate m, and at one end has a downpointing prong, q, with an exterior segmentshaped face, g. This prong projects down through a slot, r, located in the base-plate back of the lugsf. It is important to notice that the curve ofthe segment-shaped face gf is eccentric with the pivotp. The other end of the lever O has on top a wooden knob, s, and below has a spiral spring, t, which bears on the baseplate. This spring serves to keep the eccentric prong g in a depressed condition. By pressing down on the knob s the eccentric prong will be raised. When the handle is placed in position, the lever-prong q drops into one end of the slot d, and the eccentric face q of the prong impinges on the end edge, d2, (either end edge.) ofsaid slot, and as the prong is pressed down the effect of the eccentric face all the time impingng against the end edge, d'2, will be to crowd or move the entire handle endwise, whereby the lugs f on the handle will be forced under the inclines e of the top-plate anges. Thus the lever carrying the eccentric f'acepronginsuresiirst,that the handle will be tightly connected with the iron, and, second, it prevents the handle from accidental detachment.

It will now be understood that the lugsfand prong q of the handle may enter either end of the slot din the top plate, and be secured under either end of the double or reverse inolines e.
In applying the detachable handle it is immaterial which end of the iron is foremost. Thus it Will be seen that the inconvenience of turning the handle to adjust it to the iron is avoided, and the consequent trouble and delay in tting the handle to the iron-block is olnA viated, which is of evident advantage where rapid Work is required.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States- 1. In an improved sad or polishing iron, the combination ofthe iron having a top plate provided with a slot which has at two opposite sides a flange, e, inclined on the under side, aremovable handle having a baseplate, m, provided on the bottom surface With two laterally-projecting inclined lugs, f, and alever pivoted to the baseplate and having a downward-pointing prong, g, which is provided with acurved face eccentric with the pivot, the said lugs f and prong q being so arranged relatively that they will interlock with the baseplate when inserted from either direction, thus rendering the handle reversible, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The improved sad or polishing iron comprising the combination of the iron having atop plate provided with a slot which is broadest at each end d, and at its center has side flanges, e, which are thinnest adjacent to the said broad ends, and from thence incline both Ways to the center, Where the flange is thickest, a removable handle having a base-plate, m, provided on the bottom surface with two laterally-projecting inclined lugs,f, to take under the said inclined flanges, and means, substantially as described, to prevent thchandle from accidental detachment.
