THOMAS WHITE, OF PEEKSKILL, NElV YORK.
HORSE-DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,352, dated March 13,1888.
Application filed August 27,1887. Serial No. 248,028. (No model.)
T6 aZl whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS WHITE, of Peekskill, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Horse-Detachers, of which this is a complete specification.
This invention is designed as an improvement upon the horse-detaeher shown and described in Letters Patent No. 362,341, issued to me, Thomas XVhite aforesaid, May3, 1887.
The pivotal rods employed in the said horsedetacher for locking the bolt-carrying levers in place are apt to rattle during the motion of the vehicle to which the device is applied.
The object of my present improvement is to provide a locking and releasing device for this purpose, none of the parts of which can rattle, while an equal or greater reliability of action is assured.
To this end in the improvement each boltcarrying lever is connected to a part of the whiffletree by a knuckle-jointed rod, which, when straightened, locks the trace bolt in place, and to which a flexible line is connected for folding it and thus retracting the tracebolt, substantially in the manner hereinafter described, and as pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a horse-detacher embodying my improvement when the traces are fastened. Fig. 2is a plan view of one end of the said detacher when the trace is released, and Fig. 3 is a front view of the same.
The whiffletree A may be provided with end sockets to receive the trace-bolts B, and the levers C, to which the bolts 13 are hinged, be pivoted to rigid brackets D on the whiffietree,
as in my previous patent, No. 362,341, before mentioned.
The free end of each bolt-carrying lever O is directly connected to the whiffletree A, or to an attachment thereof, by a knuckle-j ointed rod, E, the ends of which are pivoted to the said lever and whiffletree, respectively.
The two rods E on the ends of the whiffletree are connected together, preferably at their joints, by a cord or line, F, which is guided by pulleys G, arranged on the inside of the whiffletrec, near the ends thereof, and an operating cord or line, H, is attached to the middle of the connecting cord or line F, and is carried to an easily-accessible point in the body of the vehicle, substantially as in my previous patent, No. 362,341.
The jointed rods E when straightened, as in Fig. 1, securely lock the trace bolts against accidental retraction; but in case of a runaway by pulling on the line H the rods E are simultaneously folded at their joints, as illustrated in Fig. 2, thereby swinging the pivotal levers O, retracting the bolts B, and releasing the traces, as by my original form of detacher referred to.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the whiftletree having end sockets, the pivotal levers, and the trace-bolts'hinged thereto, of knuckle-jointed rods connecting the pivotal bolt'carrying levers with the whiffletree, and a draw line or lines for folding the knucklejointed rods and retracting the tracebolts, substantially as described.
THOMAS YVH ITE.
