'A. HOUSE.
GUIDE FOR SAWS.
No. 379,165, Patented Mar. 6, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN HOUSE, OF PARAGOULD, ARKANSAS.
GUIDEFOR SAWS. V
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379.165, dated March 6, 1688.
Application filed November 9. I887. Serial No. 254.694. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLEN HoUsE, a citi- 'zen of the United States. residing at Paramay be guided and held from lateral play.
The invention consists in a device having a slotted plate tobe secured to the bed of the machine and a rigid guide-arm which is formed integral with the slotted plate. To one end of the rigid arm is pivoted the end of a movable arm, which is adapted to be raised to a vertical position to allow the saw-blade to be in serted between the free ends of the guide-arms. The movable arm is provided with a lateral Wing or stop to bear on the upper side of the rigid arm to support the former in the horizontal or operative position. The free ends of the guide arms are provided with horizontal tapped openings, in which are arranged the adjusting-screws, which hear at their inner ends against opposite sides of the saw.
The invention is described more fully in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a sawingmachine with my improved guide applied thereto in the operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the guide detached from the machine, and showing the movable arm raised in dotted lines, to illustrate its manner of operation. tached perspective view to show the connection between the guide-arms.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates the bed of the sawing-machine and E designates the saw, which is supported thereon and operated in any ordinary or preferred manner.
0 designates the improved guide, of which 0 represents the slotted plate having the longitudinal slots E E. The said slotted plate is adapted to bear on any convenient portion of Fig. 3 is a dethe bed of the machine adjacent to the saw, and the bolts F F are passed through the slots E E and secured in the bed. It will be seen that the guide 0 is capable of longitudinal adjustment to suit the size of the saw employed in the machine.
To the outer side of the slotted plate is attached the rigid guide-arm D, (which is preferably, as beforestated, formed integral with the slotted plate,) and the said arm is provided at one end with a horizontal tapped opening, 01. The opposite end of the arm D is provided on the lower side with a depending eye,
E, the opening in which is horizontal.
G designates a movable or swinging guidearm, which is provided at one end with a horizontal tapped opening, 9, aligning with the opening din the rigid arm, and at the other end with a depending eye, H, having a horizontal opening therein which is adapted to be aligned with the opening in the eye E.
I designates the pivot-pin, which is passed through the aligned eyes E H, whereby the movable guide-arm is pivoted to the rigid arm and is capable of vertical movement at the outer or front end.
K L designate adjusting-screws, which are fitted in the tapped openings in the ends of the guide-arms, and wooden plugs is Z are arranged in the inner ends of the said screws to bear against opposite sides of the saw. It will be seen that the said adj usting-screws may be screwed in or out to bring the saw into the proper line.
The guidearm D is provided on the upper side at the rear end with a recess, M, and the rear end of the arm G is provided on one side with the laterally-extending wing or stop N,
which is adapted to fitsnugly in the recess M and it will be seen that there is no necessity for any fastening for the movable arm, as it will be thus held firmly in the operative posi tion.
The construction of this device is very simple, enabling it to be very easily and cheaply manufactured, and, being formed in a con nected form, it may be attached to any machine without any previous preparation. It is usual to form the guides in several distinct parts, all of which are attached separately to the sawing-machine. It has been my object to provide a device which could be quickly and easily attached to any machine now in use, all the parts of the said device being con nected, so that they might be attached at the same time and by the same operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The herein-described saw-guide having the slotted plate 0, the rigid arm D, secured to the said plate and having the depending horizontal eye E on the rear end, the movable arm G, having the depending horizontal eye H on one end to align with the eye E, the pin I, passing through the said aligned eyes, and the lateral wing or stop N on the side of the movable arm to bear on the rigid arm when the said arms are parallel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
