Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. STINE, OF MARIETTA, INDIANA.
TENSION FOR SELF-B'INDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 379,083, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed July 21, 1887. Serial No. 244,928.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. STINE, a resident of Marietta, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tension Devices for Grain Automatical Twine-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My im provemeut relates to tension devices for grain automatical twine-binders in which out the several views.
The rollers r r rotate on their axles or pins P P, which pass through and are firmly held by the upward projections of their respective holders h h, arranged in line on the base I), with the rollers parallel and approximate. The holder h is stationary.v The holder his provided with a slot, sZ,'allowing it to slide lengthwise under the head of .the screw 30 in the base '11. The arms ofthe yoke 3 include the roller 1' and are secured to the holder it, its extension ex passing through the eye of the vertical arm of the holder h, upon whichv is placed the spring sp. The angular arm a is fastened to the box I), or to an extension of the base I), its eye 6 resting over the line of contact between the rollers.
The tension device may be confined to the box b or used separately, to suit the construction of the binder. The box I) may be of any (No model.)
convenient shape or size. In Fig. 1 parts of its front are cut away to' show the twine ball tb and the lower end of the screw so. The thread it passes from the ball through the eye 9' of the base b, between the rollers, through the eye 6 of the arm a, and thence through the usual guides to the needle of the binder. The spring sp separates the rollers when the spring sp is relaxed. By compressing the spring sp with the nut n the roller 1" is drawn to the roller 1", pressing the thread between them with the force required to secure the proper tension, the springs affording sufficient elasticity to allow enlargements or knots of the thread to pass without unnecessary straining.
This device may be used in any required position, and may be applied to any twinebinder now in use.
WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isv The combination, in a tension device, of the twine-box b, the eye 6 in the base b, the base I), the holder h, with 'its slot 81, the set-screw so in the base I) and through the slot 82, the arm a, its lower end fastened to the top of the box 12 and its upper end projecting over the roller 1', holder h, with its vertical arms to form bearings for the journals of the roller 1", and its vertical extension to form a bearing for the extension of the yoke y, the rollers r1", thejournals P P, the yoke y, secured at one end to the holder h and having at the other end an extension, cm, the nut 12, the springs sp 8p, and the eye 6 in the upper end of the arm a, all substantiallyas above described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM H. STINE.
