No. 379,079. i
HARROW.
Patented Mar. 6, 1888 UNITED STATESV PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ANDREW PERIN, OF BEETOWN, WISCONSIN.
HARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,079, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed February 18, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ANDREW PERIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beetown, county of Grant, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Method of Attaching Tongues to Harrows, of which the following is a full, accurate, and true description.
' My invention is designed to render the use of the tongue much more practicable than heretofore by giving it a limited lateral 1notion to facilitate turning, and also by fully providing for the irregular movement of the harrow incident to its use on rough or uneven ground.
The above objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front portion of a common harrow with a tongue atf tached by my improved method or mechanism. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tongue attachments proper, and Fig. 3 represents a modified manner of attaching the hinge-piece F to the harrow.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary harrow-tongue.
C C are draw-bars constructed of one piece of metal bent to forman eye at H. Said drawbars may be of unequal length, so as to draw the harrow in an angling manner. rIhe tongue is pivotedto'said draw-bars by a bolt which passes through the eye H, and is securely fastened in the tongue at sufficient distance from its rearward end to allow the latter to rest and swing upon the curved supporting -bar B, which extends between the draw-bars C C and is firmly attached thereto at either end. This supporting-bar B, which is preferably made of Wood, is provided with the metal lugs G Gr, which serve as stops against which the end of semi No. 228,140. (No modem the tongue A strikes when it has swung to as great an angle as it is intended to make.
D is a guide-loop fastened at the rearward end of the tongue A and passing around the supporting-bar B.
The ends of the draw-bars C C terminate in the pivotal loops E E, by means of which they are secured to the harrow by a bolt passing through the said loops and the eye of the hingepieces F F, which latter serve at once the purpose of pivoting the tongue to the harrow and of protecting the wooden frame of the harrow from abrasion by contact with the back ends ofthe loops E E.
The parts F F may be bolted to the wooden frame ofthe harrow, or to cross-bars extending between adjacent parts ofthe frame, as in Fig. 3, or in any other suitable manner.
If desired, the eye in the hinge-pieces F F may be changed to a slot running nearly their entire length, so as to increase the flexibility ofthe implement.
The loops E E are constructed wide enough to allow for lateral play of the wings of the harrow and extend back of the pivotal point, and are curved upward so as to prevent the harrow from being upset onto the team, while permitting the back end of it to be raised for the purpose of cleaning out rubbish or by irregularities in the ground.
I claiml. The combination of the tongue A, having the guide-loop D, with the draw-bars G Gand the curved supporting-bar B, as described.
2. The draw-bars C C, having curved pivotal loops E E, in combination with the hingepieces F F, as and for the purposes described.
CHARLES ANDREW PERIN.
