Abstract

A scraper for an automobile windshield or the like with an elongated scraper head mounted crosswise at the end of an elongated handle. The head has a V-shape in cross section opening forwardly away from the handle. An ice scraper blade extends integrally from and along one wall of the head while a flexible scraper blade is held along the other wall of the head between said wall and a keeper member secured to the head, said keeper member having a plurality of sharp projecting teeth penetrating the flexible blade.

1 Claim, 5 Drawing Figures PAIENIED JAHZQ I974 FIEIS WINDSI-IIELD SCRAPER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Automobile window scrapers are subject to much abuse particularly when used to remove hardened ice adhering firmly to a cold window. The scraper blades are frequently broken or otherwise damaged so as to render them ineffective.

Also, it is desirable that the scraper head be provided with a rigid blade for breaking up and chipping off hard or icy materials and a soft flexible squeegee-type blade for clearing snow and slush from the vehicle windows. While some scrapers are provided with such a flexible blade, it is frequency found that the blade tends to tear away from the head under stress due to weaknesses in improper mounting.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION I An object of the invention is to provide a scraper for clearingice and snow from automobile windows which has both 'a rigid and a flexible blade mounted on a common head in such a manner as to withstand breakage under the most severe scraping conditions.

With this and other objects in view the invention broadly comprises a scraper head mounted crosswise at the forward end of an elongated handle, the head having a cross sectional forwardly opening V-shaped bracket with a rigid scraper along one wall thereof, and a V-shaped keeper member securing a flexible blade against the other wall thereof and with the keeper having a plurality of sharp teeth penetrating the flexible blade.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now more particularly to the drawing reference numerals will be used to denote like parts or structural features in the different views. The scraper comprises a head denoted generally at mounted at one end of an elongated handle 11. The head 10 consists of a main scraper bracket 12, a blade 14 of flexible material, a keeper member. 15 and a pair of rivets 16. To facilitate description of the components and their relative arrangement the head 10 will be deemed to be positioned qn e from r forward end of handle 11 and the terms front" and "rear" will be used hereafter to denote relative directions in accordance with such positron.

Scraper bracket 12 is a unitary member formed of a rigid plastic material and has a mounting sleeve 17 formed integrally with and medially connected to a backing portion of the bracket having

18 and 19 arranged in a V-shape and opening away from the handle. Wall 18 is slightly narrower than wall 19 and has a rigid scraper blade 20 projecting from and extending along its .Outer edge. Blade 20 tapers in thickness in its forward extension and its leading outer edge denoted at 21 is straight and sharp to conform closely to a sheet of window glass to clean the same as it is moved thereover. ,Atplurali-ty of projections 22 are formed in spaced relation along the outer side of blade 20 for the purpose of gouging through any layer of ice that may be formed on'a window surface. A small inwardly protruding ledge 24 is provided to extend along the inner side of blade 20.

Wall 18 has two or more stop ledges 25 formed on the inner side thereof. A pair of coplanar gusset wings 26 join diametrically opposite portions of sleeve 17 to the inner side of the backing portion of the bracket along the apex of thejunction between

18 and 19 are connected by a pair of strips 27 disposed one near each end of the bracket and apertures 28 extend through the bracket and each strip in a fore and aft direction.

18 and 19 and interconnected on their front sides by gussets 32 spaced-longitudinally therealong. A pair of bosses 34 on the back side of the keeper are spaced apart equally with strips 27 to seal flatly thereagainst and apertures 35 extend in fore and aft direction thereto in alignment with apertures 28. A plurality of sharply pointed teeth 36 extend rearwardly from wall 30 and are spaced along substantially the entire area thereof.

In assembling the scraper blade 14 is placed against the front side of bracket wall 18 and seated against the stop ledges 25. Keeper 15 is then placed in position with wall 30 engaging against blade 14, bosses 34 window surface so that edge 21 may loosen snow or ice thereon. Where the ice is relatively thick the projections 22 may be moved therealong to gouge into the ice layer and expedite the loosening thereof. When the ice and snow have been freed from adherence to the window surface the flexible blade 14 is then used to wipe it away. In many instances blade 14 may effectively clean the window without prior use of blade 20.

The V-shaped construction of the bracket 12 and keeper 15 make the scraper head extremely strong and I enable it to withstand great scraping pressures without breakage. Moreover, keeperlS not only serves to securely fasten the blade 14 in the head but it also, through engagement with ledge 24, braces the blade 20 along a medial line on its inner face to prevent inward collapse and breakage thereof during engagement of the blade with hard ice.

Having now therefore fully illustrated and described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to protect by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In a windshield scraper having an elongated handle and a scraper head mounted on one end of the handle and extending perpendicular thereto, said head comprising main scraper bracket in parallelism thereto with one wall in edgewise engagement with and reinforcing the scraper blade and the other wall holding the blade of flexible material firmly against said other wall of the scraper bracket, andd. saidkeeper member other wall having a plurality of sharply pointed teeth spaced therealong and penetrating the blade of flexible material.

Claims

1. In a windshield scraper having an elongated handle and a scraper head mounted on one end of the handle and extending perpendicular thereto, said head comprising a. an elongated main scraper bracket of rigid plastic material having a V-shape in cross section with one wall thereof carrying a rigid scraper blade and having an integral mounting sleeve thereon for receiving said one end of the handle, b. a blade of flexible material disposed against the other wall of said scraper bracket, c. an elongated keeper member also having a V-shape in cross section and being secured to the main scraper bracket in parallelism thereto with one wall in edgewise engagement with and reinforcing the scraper blade and the other wall holding the blade of flexiblE material firmly against said other wall of the scraper bracket, and d. said keeper member other wall having a plurality of sharply pointed teeth spaced therealong and penetrating the blade of flexible material.
