ARTHUR J. MOXIIAM, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROLLS FOR ROLLING FLANGELESS CENTER-BEARING RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,211, dated February 21, 1888.
SerialNofiSSflSS. (No model.)
1'0 aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. hIOXl-IAM, of Johnstown, in the county of Gainbria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Rolls for Rolling Flangeless Center- Bearing Rails, which invention is fully set forth and illustrated in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the rapid rolling of girdenraiis of the form hereinafter described.
The invention will first be described, and then particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing the figure illustrates in front elevation a setof finislr ing-rolls for effecting the purposes of this in- Vcntion.
In said figure the upper roll is indicated by the letter A and the lower roll by the letter B, and the passes between the rolls are indicated, respectively, by' the figures 1 2 8 i 5, said passes being live in number. The form of rail suited to enter pass No. 1 can first be rolled by any known method of rolling or in any special passes that may be provided for such purpose, after which said form of rail is operated upon in the rolls herein described. The passes marked 1, 2, and 3 are edgingpasses, and passes Nos. at and 5 are finishing dummy passes. In passes Nos. 1, 2, and 3 a rapid draft is put on the metal which is to form the web portion of the rail, and ample provision is also made for the reduction of the same in the subsequent dummy passes, Nos. 4 and 5. This great draft in the early passes renders the web sufficiently thin to enter successively the two dummy finishing-passes Nos. 4; and 5, the special purpose of which is enlarged upon later. Provision is also made for the wire -drawing of the extreme portions of the metal which is to form the side trams of the rails by the shape of passes 1 2, and 3 at these points, said passes providing an ample amount of material to compensate for said wire-drawing. In pass No. 3 the angles of the lower sides of the trams are reduced at their inner portions near the central web, thereby throwing a maximum drafton this neutral portion of the metal. In pass No. i hollow ing out under the side trains and on the top of the same is commenced by partial draft at these points, and this hollowing out is continned and finished in the lastorfinishing pass.
It is not essential to this invention that a definite number of edging passes precede passes Nos. 4 and 5; but I am not aware that dummy passes have heretofore been provided as finishing-passes having the draft in said passes concentrated, as 'hereinbefore described, on the side trams adjoining the head of the rail on the upper portion and adjoining the web on either side on the upper portion or part of said side trams.
Having thus fully described my said improvement in rolls, as of my invention I claim- 1. Rolls for rolling tlangeless center-bearing rails, provided with finishing dummy passes having therein the draft of the rolls concentrated upon the metal being rolled on the upper portion of the side trams adjoining the head of the rail, and also on the under side of said trams on either side of and adjoining the web of the rail, substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
2. Rolls for rolling fiangeless center-bearing rails, provided with passes having substantially the shapes or combinations respectively shown in the accompanying drawing, and numbered from 1 to 5, inclusive.
