UNITED Srnrns Parnnr rrrcn JOSEPH \VETZLER AND SIGMUND XVETZLER, OF I-IOBOKEN, NEXV JERSEY.
ELECTRO=MAGNETlC BELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,124, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed January 25, 1887. Serial No. 225,812. (Nomodeld To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J osnrn W ETZLER and SIGMUND WnTzLnn, citizens of the United States, residing in Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elect-ro-Hagnetic Bells; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of our invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in bells, and especially such bells as are operated through the medium of an electromagnet by the act-ion of an electric current. In that class of bells the adjustments are extremely liable to get out of order, and it fre quently becomes necessary to readjust the gong with relation to the bell-hammer or the hammer with relation to the gong. The usual method is to bend the hammer arm, so as to carry the hammer nearer to or farther from the gong. This operation, besides being inconvenient, is liable to. cause the breaking of the hammer-arm, and so to render the bell uselessi Our invention consists in providing means whereby the necessary adjustments can be secured without recourse to the method referred to and with very simple and easy manipulation.
Our invention contemplates the making of the adjustments by shifting the position of the striker upon the hannnenarm.
In the drawing, which illustrates our invention and forms a part of this specification, the figure is an elevation of an electromagnetic bell constructed in accordance with our invention.
In the drawing we have shown an electromagnetic boll having a gong. A, and a hammerurm, B, and being provided with an electroonagnct, 0, and the proper electrical connections for constituting the whole apparatus a vibratorbell.
It is not thoughtneccssary to describe the electrical connections, inasmuch as our invention relates especially to means for adjusting the relations of the gong and the bell-11ammer. In the form here shown we make the hammer or striker b in the general shape of a cone, or, rather, the frustum of a cone, and mounted upon the lever-arm B, making a screw-connection between the parts. Above the striker is a nut, Z), for holding it in place upon the hammer-arm. The striker is normall y located in such a position upon the hammer-arm and with relation to the gong that contact will be made with the latter by a portion of the striker located about half-way between its extremities. This being the case, it is evident that a movement of the striker I) up or down upon the hammer-arm B will alter the distance between the gong and the striker and serve as a mode of adjusting the relations of those parts. If it is desired to bring the striker nearer to the gong, it will be screwed downward, and if farther away it willbe moved in the opposite direction. The form of hammer-head may be varied, it being only necessary that a longitudinal adjustment of it should change its relation to a fixed object at one side of it.
Having now described our invention, what we claim is- 1. The combination, with a bellgong, an electro-inagnet, and a hammer-arm connected with the armature thereof, of a striker consisting of a conical piece adjustable upon the hammenarm, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a bell-gong and a hammer-arm, of a striker consisting of a conical piece adjustable upon the said arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof We have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two subscribing e witnesses.
