Abstract

A switchboard cubicle compartment disconnect contact shutter in which a plurality of stationary disconnect contacts are mounted in recesses in a back wall of the compartment and a truck mounted circuit interrupter is introducible into a compartment, the truck mounted circuit breaker having a frame movable with respect to the truck frame toward and away from the disconnects in the back wall. The shutter structure is rotatably mounted on the back wall and has openings therein; one angular position of the shutter causes the openings to register with the recesses for the stationary disconnect contacts in the compartment; a second angular position of the shutter causes the openings to move away from registration with the recesses for the stationary disconnect contacts in the back wall. A connection between the frame carrying the circuit interrupter elements and the shutter rotates the shutter to provide access to the stationary disconnect contacts in the back wall when the circuit interrupter frame is moved with respect to the truck frame towards said back wall; and moves the shutter to the second mentioned angular position as the circuit interrupter frame is racked out toward test position with respect to the truck frame. This action is obtained by a rotatable lever on a stationary pivot on the side wall of the compartment; one end of the lever being connected to the shutter and the other end of the lever being engageable by a member on the circuit interrupter carrying frame to rotate the lever and hence the shutter between the first and second angular positions in accordance with the location of the circuit interrupter carrying frame within said compartment and with respect to the truck frame.

57 ABSTRACT A switchboard cubicle compartment disconnect contact shutter in which a plurality of stationary disconnect contacts are mounted in recesses in a back wall of the compartment and a truck mounted circuit interrupter is introducible into a compartment, the truck mounted circuit breaker having a frame movable with respect to the truck frame toward and away from the disconnects in the back wall. The shutter structure is rotatably mounted on the back wall and has openings therein; one angular position of the shutter causes the openings to register with the recesses for the stationary disconnect contacts in the compartment; a second angular position of the shutter causes the openings to move away from registration with the recesses for the stationary disconnect contacts in the back wall. A connection between the frame carrying the circuit interrupter elements and the shutter rotates the shutter to provide access to the stationary disconnect contacts in the back wall when the circuit interrupter frame is moved with respect to the truck frame towards said back wall; and moves the shutter to the second mentioned angular position as the circuit interrupter frame is racked out toward test position with respect to the truck frame. This action is obtained by a rotatable lever on a stationary pivot on the side wall of the compartment; one end of the lever being connected to the shutter and the other end of the lever being engageable by a member on the circuit interrupter carrying frame to rotate the lever and hence the shutter between the first and second angular positions in accordance with the location of the circuit interrupter carrying frame within said compartment and with respect to the truck frame.

Claims (4)

1. In draw out switchgear comprising a housing; said housing having a back wall; switchgear movable in said housing toward and away from said wall; said switchgear having a set of back connection contacts directed toward said back wall; a corresponding set of stationary contact members positioned in said back wall; said back connection contacts each engaging a corresponding stationary contact member when the switchgear is moved in said housing to its limit of movement toward said back wall; said back connection contacts disengaging said stationary contact members upon movement of said switchgear away from said back wall; a shutter; said shutter extending parallel to said back wall and rotatably mounted with respect thereto; said shutter having a plurality of openings therein; means biasing said shutter to an angular position where no opening is in registry with said stationary contact members and access to said stationary contact members is blocked by said shutter; a lever, said lever being mounted in said housing and extending parallel to the path of movement of said switchgear in said housing; a rotatable pivot for said lever mounted on a portion of said housing remote from said back wall, said lever being mounted on said rotatable pivot; said lever being pivotally connected at its opposite end to said shutter; rotation of said lever in one direction rotating said shutter against the said biasing means to move the shutter to a position where said openings register with certain of said stationary contact members in said back wall and no portion of the shutter blocks access to said stationary contact members; said biasing means driving said lever in a second direction and said shutter to access blocking position; a lever operating first member on said switchgear and a second member on said lever; said first and second members being in camming relation; and said first member on said switchgear engaging said second member on said lever on the occurrence of at least a portion of the movement of said switchgear toward said back wall and moving said lever and shutter against the force of said biasing means to rotate said shutter away from stationary contact blocking position to a Position where access of the back disconnect contacts to the stationary contact members is available.

In draw out switchgear comprising a housing; said housing having a back wall; switchgear movable in said housing toward and away from said wall; said switchgear having a set of back connection contacts directed toward said back wall; a corresponding set of stationary contact members positioned in said back wall; said back connection contacts each engaging a corresponding stationary contact member when the switchgear is moved in said housing to its limit of movement toward said back wall; said back connection contacts disengaging said stationary contact members upon movement of said switchgear away from said back wall; a shutter; said shutter extending parallel to said back wall and rotatably mounted with respect thereto; said shutter having a plurality of openings therein; means biasing said shutter to an angular position where no opening is in registry with said stationary contact members and access to said stationary contact members is blocked by said shutter; a lever, said lever being mounted in said housing and extending parallel to the path of movement of said switchgear in said housing; a rotatable pivot for said lever mounted on a portion of said housing remote from said back wall; said lever being mounted on said rotatable pivot; said lever being pivotally connected at its opposite end to said shutter; rotation of said lever in one direction rotating said shutter against the said biasing means to move the shutter to a position where said openings register with certain of said stationary contact members in said back wall and no portion of the shutter blocks access to said stationary contact members; said biasing means driving said lever in a second direction and said shutter to access blocking position; a lever operating first member on said switchgear and a second member on said lever; said first and second members being in camming relation; and said first member on said switchgear engaging said second member on said lever on the occurrence of at least a portion of the movement of said switchgear toward said back wall and moving said lever and shutter against the force of said biasing means to rotate said shutter away from stationary contact blocking position to a position where access of the back disconnect contacts to the stationary contact members is available, said biasing means moving said lever and shutter toward access blocking position on movement of said switchgear away from said back wall of said housing, said back wall being provided with a plurality of recesses; the said stationary contact members being mounted in said recesses; the said shutter being mounted parallel to and closely adjacent said back wall; and the rotatable mounting of said shutter being located substantially at its center of gravity.

The draw out switchgear of claim 2 in which said back connection contacts on said switchgear comprise a first group of three aligned back disconnect contacts and a second group of three aligned back disconnect contacts parallel thereto; the said stationary contact members in said back wall also comprise a first group of three aligned stationary contacts and a second group of three aligned contacts and recesses therefor corresponding to the back disconnect contacts on said switchgear; the rotatable mounting of said shutter being located between the middle contacts of each of the two groups of said stationary contact members.

The draw out switchgear of claim 3 in which the said plurality of openings in said shutter include notches in the edges thereof arranged to register with a pair of diagonally opposite recesses in said back wall and a pair of openings therein arranged to register with the center recess of each of the said pair of groups of stationary contact members in the said access position of the shutter; the sides of the shutter adjacent the third pair of diaGonally opposite recesses clearing said recesses in the said access position of the shutter; said notches and openings of said shutter moving out of registry with their respective recesses and the said sides of the shutter moving into blocking relation with their associated recesses in the access blocking position of said shutter.
