SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.-377,515, dated February 7, 1888.
Application filed January 21, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILIO QUEROL YDEL- GADO, a subject of the King of Spain, at present residing in Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Sewing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved sewing-machine adapted to form one or two parallel rows of stitching.
The invention consists in the .construction and arrangement of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims. a
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isa plan viewof my improvement. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, with parts in section. Fig. 4 is a'sectional end elevation of the same on the line at x of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the shuttle-race and its contents. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section of the mechanism for operating the needle-bar on the line 2 z of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a sectional side elevation showing the connection of the needle-bar with the needle-bar-lever, and Fig. 8 is a transverse section taken on the line z z of Fig. 3.
On top of the casing A is hinged the bedplate A, supporting in suitable bearings on -its under side the main shaft B, carrying the usual driving-pulley, B, and the fly or hand wheel B The cam-wheel G is secured on the shaft B, and is provided on one face with the cam-groove G, in which operates a pin or friction-roller, D, held on the lower end of the, vertical bar D, having one bearing in the bedplate A, and another bearing, E, in the arm E, which is open at the rear and on top.
The bearing E is provided with a remova- I ble end plate or cover, E held on the arm E by pins or other means. The upper end of the vertical bar D is provided with a socket, D in which fits the reduced end of the horizontal needle-bar lever D pivoted at D to the horizontal extension of the arm E. The front reduced end of the lever D fits into a recess Serial No. 225,024. (No model.)
vertically-sliding and spring-actuated bar Gr" and the arms G pivoted to the enlarged part v of the said bar G and held normally ina horizontal position by'the springs G the said arms being provided with eyes G through which the threads pass. The tension devices H are secured tothe lower end of the head E and each consist of a. spring-bar having a halfround end, E fitting in a correspondinglyshaped'head, H secured to the head E The head H is provided with a notch, H through which the thread passes, and the pressure of the spring-bar is regulated by the bolt and nut H. y
The presser-bar I is mounted to slide verti-- cally in the said head E and on its upper end is pivoted the cam-lever I, acting on the top plate of the head E and serving, in conjunction with the spring I", to raise orlower the presser-bar I. On the lower end of, the presser-ba'r I is secured the presser-foot 1 having three prongs forming two slots for the passage of the needles F The serrated feed-dogJ, located below the presser-foot I and in a suitable slot formed in the bed plate A, is secured to feed bar J adapted .to slide crosswise inabearing formed in the middle of the partition A held on the under side of the bed-plate A, which is also provided with a slot, A on each side'of the said partition A, forming the raceway for the shuttles. The bar J is pivoted by means of the pin J which passes'through its forked end, and is provided with a lug, J against which the cam-arm J 4 on the beveled end J of the rodJ. engages, Therod J is mounted in hearings on the under side of the bed-plate A, and is provided with the arm J ,which has its free end engaging the cam-groove K in the cam K on the shaft B, the said arm J being held in contact with the groove K'f by the spring J The return movement of the feedbar J is. accomplished by the spring J", and the amount'of feed is regulated by the wedge L, secured to the rod L in bearings on the un- IOC der side of the bed-plate, and provided with a pin projecting through a slot, A, in said bedplate, and provided with a button, L
In the partition A is formed a transverse slot, A, (see Fig. 4,) in which slides the crosshead N, supporting the shuttle-carriers O 0, located one at each side of the said partition A. Each shuttle-carrier 0 supports a shuttle, P, of any approved construction, held in place on the said carrier by a spring-lug, O, bent upward from the said spring-carrier and fitting into a notch, P, located on top of the pointed end of the shuttle P.
" The cross-head N is provided with a downwardly-projecting pin, N, which passes into the forked end of the arm Q of the bell-crank lever Q, pivoted at Q to the under side of the bed-plate A, and having its other arm, Q pivotally connected with the bar R, adapted to slide vertieallyin suitable bearings secured to the under side of the bed-plate A. The sliding bar It is provided with a pin or friction-roller, R, which engages the cam-groove 0, formed on the rim of the cam-wheel O.
The bobbins S and S, carrying the needlethreads T and T, are held on the bobbinspindles S secured to the horizontal extensions of the arm E. The threadsTand T pass from the bobbins S and S to an eye, U, on top of the head E and from this eyeU one thread,
T, passes down on the inside of the lever Eto the tension device II, and then the thread passes upward and through the eye G formed on the outer end of the take-up arm G of the take-up mechanism G. The thread T then passes downward to the eye F on the needle bar F, and from there to the eye of the needle on the right side. The other thread, T, passes from the eye U to a second eye, U, on top of the head E and then downward to the tension device H on the front plate, E", of the head E and then up to the eye G of the other take-up arm, G and then the thread passes downward and through the eye F on the needlebar F, from which the thread passes to the eye of the needle F on the left side.
The slots A, forming the raceway of the shuttles, are covered by sliding plates W, in the usual manner.
The operation is as follows: A revolving motion is imparted in the usual manner to the main shaft B and its cam-wheel O, and the latter imparts, by means of the cam-groove O, the vertical arm D, and the horizontal arm D, a vertical sliding motion to the needle-bar F, which in its descent acts on the take-up mechanism G, which is carried downward with the needle-bar F, and thus permits the lower ends of the threads T and T to follow the needles F. When the needle-bar F is on its up ward stroke, then the take-up mechanism G exerts a pull on the threads T and T,which are thus unwound from their respective bobbins S and S. The lower ends of the threads T and T are held in the cloth to be sewed, and the tension mechanisms H H prevent a too rapid unwinding of the threads from their respective bobbins, and also prevent breakage of the threads. The shuttle-carriers O are actuated by the rotation of the cam-wheel C, which 1mparts, by means of the cam-groove C and the pin R, a sliding motion to the bar It, and the latter imparts a swinging motion to the bellcrank lever Q, which causes the cross-head N, supporting the said shuttlecarriers O, to slide forward and backward in its bearings on the partition A of the bed-plate A. Theshuttles P each form a loop, which, in conjunction with the action of the respective needle-thread,forms a stitch in the usual manner, and as saidloops are formed at the same time and two needles descend, I form two stitches simultaneously. As the formation of each stitch takes place in the usual manner, I need not describe it: The vertical arm D, acting on the horizontal lever D connected with the needle'bar F, can be easily disconnected and removed from the machine for repairs or for other purposes by taking off the cover E of the bearing E' in the arm E, which then permits of disconnecting the arm D from the reduced end of the hor zontal lever D the removal of which cover is effected by withdrawing the pin a. (See dotted lines in Fig. 1 and full lines in Fig. 8.)
One of the needles and its corresponding shuttle and thread may be dispensed with, and the sewing-machine will then operate as a single-stitch machine. The distance between the two needles and the two shuttles may be increased or diminished to suit the width of the two parallel rows of stitches to be made.
The take-up, thetension device, and the feeding devices herein shown and described form no part of this application, they being made the subject of separate applications numbered 256,885, 256,886, and 256,887, respectively.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a sewingmachine, the combination, with the needle-bar carrying two needles, of a partition having a transverse and a vertical slot, a cross-head traveling in the said transverse slot, two shuttle-carriers secured to the said cross-head, a shuttle in each of the said carriers, and a feed-dog held in the said vertical slot in the partition between the said shuttle and the said needle, and means for actuating the shuttle-carriers and feed-dog, substantially as shown and described.
