Ihviran STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE RUSSELL, OF FAYETTE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO G. W. GRIFFIN AND D. A. BAKER, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
SIDING-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,085, dated January 31, 1888.
Application filed May 27, 1987. Serial No. 239,551. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayette, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Siding-Gages, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in siding-gages; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts for service, fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is aperspective of the device in the operative position. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the movable brad thrown back in dotted lines.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the body of the tool, comprising the lower vertical arm, B, the horizontal outwardly-extending arm, O, at the upper extremity of the arm 13, and the upper vertical arm, D, extend ing up from the outer extremity ofthe arm O. The said arms B O D are preferably formed integral, and a thin vertical blade, E, is formed on the upper side of the horizontal arm 0 at the inner end, as a continuation of the inner side of the lower vertical arm, B. The said lower arm, B, is provided with a longitudinal slot, B, and in the lower end of the same is pivoted the lower end of a swinging arm, G, and about the central point of the arm is formed on the inner side a sharp brad or projection, H, adapted to pass through the slot B and enter the sidingboard.
On the outer side of the arm G, and directly opposite the brad H, is formed a boss, h, designed to be struck by a hammer, if necessary, to drive the brad properlyinto the said board, and the upper end of the arm G is shaped to form a handle to enable the brad to be drawn when desired.
I designates a sleeve to slide on the arm D, and the inner side of the sleeve is provided with an inwardly-projecting horizontal supporting-arm, K. A thumbscrew, L, is passed through the outer side of the sleeve I, and is adapted to be caused to impinge at the inner end against the outer side of the vertical arm to hold the sleeve at any desired point thereon.
To use the invention, pass the blade E under the lower edge of the last-nailed board, with the vertical arm B flat against the face of the board below, and the brad H is then driven into the said board, thereby securing the gage in position. The movable supporting-arm is set to the desired distance above the arm 0, and the device is ready for use. The board is rested at the lower edge on the supportingarms of two gages arranged as above described, and is thus held in position to nail.
The tool is very simple and easily made, and is very effective in use. A gage is placed at each end, and, if desired, at the middle of the board to be secured in place, and as they may be arranged in a very short time they will be found of great utility, as no unsightly holes are made in the boards, as when a nail is driven and then drawn.
The brad used in this device is flat and enters the wood with the grain thereof.
I claim- In a siding-gage, the combination, with the body D, having the lower arm, B, provided with a slot, B, in its lower end, of the swinging arm G, pivoted in the lower end of the said slot and curved at the upper end to form a handle, the said arm being provided on one side at the center with a brad, H, adapted to swing through the slot B, and on the other side with the boss h, arranged directly in line with the brad H,and adapted to be struck with a hammer to drive the brad into the siding, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IIORA OE RUSSELL.
