H. H. SMITH TWO WHEEL-ED VEHICLE.
N0.,376,992. Patented Jan. 24, 1888.
NITAQEDS "STATES; PATENT OFFICE..-
HENRY H. SMITH, OE.KALAMA'ZOQIASSIGNOR or oNE HA F TOMARY MOHR susn, OF PORTAGE, MICHIGAN.
jTWO-WHEELED VEHICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,992, dated January 24, 1888.
7 Application filed October 13, 1887. Serial .No. 252,246. (No model.) I
This invention relates to that class of twowheeledvehicles the seat,- bars or body of which is-fulcrumed at the forward end and suspended over the axleat the rear end; and
I it has for its object a construction and association of parts, substantially as below set forth and claimed. e I
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation with one whegl removed; Fig. 2, an enlarged per-' spectiveof lettered details in Fig 1; Fig. 3, a
rear elevation oflettered details enlarged, with parts in section near thehanger 1-. Figs. 4 and 5 are broken details, below described. Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is the axle, B the thills, and D the seat-bar or body fulcrumed atjthe forward end, all substantially asdisclosed in the prior stateof the art.
Heretofore thecurved rear end of the thills has been provided with the ordinary braces in a similar'relationlo the thills as the combined braces and spring supports a 'here shown. In the present instance the supports a are longer, or, more properly, enlarged both in size and length, and, while per forming the old function of a brace, are espej crumed at the forward end, the thills having cially adapted to support the springs of the vehicle. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) These sup-' ports a (here shown vertically edge'wise and rigid) may be of flat elastic metal, if preferred, so long as they serve the combined office of a brace and spring-support.
. Of course it will beu nderstood that the vehicle on both sides is like the side here illustrated. At 0 is shown a spring like a letter V, having one branch extended. The shorter branch is attached at etc the springsupport .a, and tothe free end of the upper elon-' gated branch 2. hanger, r, is pivotally attached. The lower end of this hanger is'pivotally attached in any suitable manner to the The leverage of the body D on the springs 0 may bechanged by loosening the clips at'-v-.
and attaching the springs o to the support a at a point forward or in the rear of the point' here shown. So faras the spring a isjconcerned, any suitable spring may be employed, supported by the combined support a. g
An important feature of this invention rests inthe fact that the effect'of the springs can be dispensed with and the cart be made rigid,
so to speak, when desiringto speed the'horse.
I effect this as follows: Through the lower brace andspring' part of' the hanger is around hole having a;
- communicating extension or recess. S, Fig.4, 1
and a like hole is made through the spring support a, registering with the hole in the hanger, as at S, Fig. 5. A key or bolt, 13, is
inserted into the holes S S, said key having lugs e e, and after the key isinserted itis given a half-turn, and by means of theselugs e the said; key is locked from lateral dis placement. By this means the sent-bars or .body is rigidly supported-t-ha't is, the elastic effect of the springs is dispensed with, and the i vehicle is adapted forspeeding purposes.
Having thusidescribed my invention, what i claimis- .1. The combination of the thills having the combined braeesand spring-supports, a body or seat-bars fulcrunied at the-forward end,
and springs mountedi upon and attached to said braces and suspending or supporting said body, substantially as set forth. p
2. The combination of the vehicle-body fulthe spring-support, the springs havingthe extended end, the short end being r'nounte'd upon and attached to said support, and hangerssuspending the body from the extended ends of springs, substantially as set forth. p
3. In combination, a fulcrumed vehiclebody,,the thills having the combined braces the. 7
and spring-supports, springs, hangers suspending the bodyfrom said springs, and bolts or keys adapted to lock the hangers to the braces, whereby the effect of'the springs is dispensed with, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses. Y
VV itnesses G. O. B. HALL, SAMUEL FoLz.
