Description

B. J. ANGELL.
AHovne N, PETERS Fholo-Liqho m her. Washinglon. no.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN J. ANGELL, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS; EMMA F. AN- GELL ADMINISTEATEIX OF SAID BENJAMIN J. ANGELL, DEoEAsED) ASSIGNOR TO HORTON, ANGELL & 00., or SAME PLACE.
JEWELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,526, dated December 27, 1887.
Application filed June 8, i885.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. ANGELL,
of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jewelry; and Ido hereby declare the following specification,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a description thereof.
In securing together the backs and fronts of articles of jewelry, &e.such as buttons, brcastpins, ear-rings, &c.it has been customary to solder the rims of the front and back members to each other, or to turn the rim of the front member over upon the back to hold the parts combined.
This invention consists in securing the back and front members to each other by indenting or forcing portions of therim of one member into the rim of the other member in such a manner as to ornament the rim of the front member and hold the parts attached, as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 2 shows in perspective a sleeve-button having its front and back members secured to each other in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 represents in perspective a rear view of the button-head. Fig. 3 shows such head in section, with portions of the rim of the back member indented or forced into the rim of the front member, so as to ornament the face of the latter. Fig. 4 shows the head in section, with portions of the rim of the front member indented or forced into the rim of the back member, so as to ornament the face of the former.
A is the front member, having a rim, a. This member is shown as having a stone, A, 40 set in its face; but it may be without a stone setting and be plain or be ornamented in any preferred manner, and be of any desired style or form.
B 1s the back member, having a rim, '1), fitting within the rim a. In attaching the mem- Serial No. 167,980. (No model.)
bers A and B the back member, B, is inserted into the front member, A, and by means of proper toolssuch as an indenting-tool and die-portions of the rim 1) are forced into the rim a, so as to produce projections a on the face of the latter rim and ornament said face,
as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and attach the members to each other.
In place of indenting or forcing portions of the rim 1) into the rim a, as just described, portions of the rim a may be indented or forced into the rim 1), thereby producing cavities a in the face ,of the rim a, which ornament said face, and securing the members to each other. The number of indentations employed may be more or less than that shown in the drawings, according to the effect desired to be produced, and the form of the pr0- jections or cavities a may be greatly variedas, for instance, they may be of a circular, oval, rectangular, star-shape, or other preferred outline, and their surfaces may be plain or may be ornamented in any desired manner, as will be readily understood, depending upon the tools employed.
Although I have shown the invention embodied in a sleeve-button having a rectangular outline, yet other articles of the same outline, or of triangular, oval, circular, or other form, may have their fronts and backs secured to each other in the manner set forth.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the front member provided with a rim and the back member provided with a rim which fits that of the front member, the said rims having indentations, as described, which ornament the front rim and hold the members attached, substantially as set forth.
BENJAMIN J. ANGELL.
