SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,508, dated December 27, 1887.
Application filed August 30, 1887.

Be it known that l, WILLIAM BOYD Ron- MAN, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Faucet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in faucets, and has for its object to provide a faucet particularly adapted for use with stationary basins, whereby hot and cold water, either or both, `may be made to flow from one spout and be controlled by one handle; also, wherein the iiow may be increased or diminished or any proportion of hot or cold water be obtained.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter' fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
`Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar letters `of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a partial vertical and longitudinal section of the faucet. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line x of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on lineg/g/ of the'sametigure.

In carrying out the invention a horizontal cylinder, A, is provided, having in the upper side two apertures, a and c', surrounded by pipes B B. The one Vpipe B is connected with the hot-water supply and the pipe Bv with the cold'water supply, or vice versa. In the lower portion ofthe cylinder, aligning the space intervening the hot and cold water inlets, a third aperture, O, is produced, surrounded by the delivery-pipe C. I/Vithin the cylinder a plunger, D, is adapted to reciprov cate and also rotate, the said cylinder being manipulated by an attached rod, d, projecting through one end of the cylinder, provided with a handle or hand-wheel, d. Dianietrically in the plunger and about centrally the same an elongated aperture, d2, is produced, of greater length at one side than at the other, produced by the end walls oT said aperture being made tapering. The greater length ofthe aperture d2 is about equal to the distance intervening Serial No. 248,289. (No model.)

"The end of the plunger to which the handle is attached is provided with a peripheral segmental recess, e, adapted to receive a pin, e', projecting from the inner side of the cylinder, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the purpose .of which is to limit the rotary motion of said plunger.
In operation the short side of the aperture d2 is made to register with the outlet O. If it is desired to draw hot Water in accordance with the arrangement shown, the plunger is pushed back until the aperture d2 registers fully with the inlet a, which closes the inlet a', and if Coldwater is required alone, the plunger is drawn outward or toward the operator, which brings the inlet a and aperture dl in register, closing the inlet a. When itis desired to draw hot and cold water together, the plunger is pushed in until the aperture dz partially registers with each inlet, and to regulate the amount of water, in any event, the plunger is turned either to the right or left, according to the position of the faucet. When the pin e strikes one wall of the recess e, the Water will tlow uninterruptedly, and when the opposite wall is engaged the inlet and outlets are both closed. Y
In Fig. 4 the faucet is represented as having an inner cylinder, A', the outer casing, A, being provided with the hot and cold water inlets and pipes c c and B B', as in Figl. rIhe loutlet-pipe and outlet are, however, in alignnient with the inlet a. The inner cylinder is provided with two iulet-apertures,f and f', adapted to respectively register with the inlets a and a', or register partially with both, as in Fig. 1, and the inner cylinder is further provided with an elongated outlet-aperture, F, upon the opposi te side, adapted to register with the outlet c. To reciprocate and revolve theinner cylinder, a sleeve, IVI, is held to revolve within a jacket, M', secured upon the outer cylinder, about centrally the saine, which j aeket is provided upon one side with a rectangular recess, m, and that portion ot' the sleeve M exposed by said recess is provided with a transverse slot, n, in which a pin, N, attached to the inner cylinder and projecting outward, is adapted to slide, as shown in Fig. 4.
The operation is substantially the same as IOO in the faucet illustrated in Fig. 1, the only difference being that the manipulation is from the side.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Afaueet provided with separateinlets for hot and eold water, a single outlet, and a plug having a reciprocating and rotary movement and apertured to register with the inlets,1 sin gly or collectively, and with the outlet, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a faucet, the combination, with the easing provided with separate inlets for hot and cold Water upon one side anda single outlet upon the opposing side, of a plug having a reci proeating and rotary movement in said casing, apertured to register with the inlets,singly or eolleetively,and with the outlet, and means, substantially as described7 for actuating the Said plug.
3. In a faucet, the combination, with a easing provided with separate inlets for hot and cold water upon one side and a single outlet upon the opposing side, of a plug having a reciprocating and rotary motion in said easing, provided with an elongated diametrieal aperture having tapering end walls, and means, substantially as shown and described, for inanipulating said plug.
4. In a faucet, the combination, with a casing provided with separate inlets for cold and hot water and a single outlet upon the opposite side and an interior pin near the forward end, of a plug having a reciprocating and rotary motion Within the easing, provided with an elongated diametrieal aperture having taperingeuds adapted to register with the inlets, singly or collectively, and with the outlet, a segmental peripheral recess adapted to receive the said pin, and means, substantially as described, for mauipulati ng the plug.
