Description

(No Model.)
`C. T. BODIPIELD.
, LEATHER BBLTING. l
No. 375,333. Patented Dec."27, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo CHARLES T. BODIFIELD, OF AKRON, HIO.
LEATHER BELTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,333, dated December 27, 1887.
Application tiled August 25, 1887.
Serial No. 247,820. (No specimens.)
more layers of leather are united to form the belt. Heretofore this union has been effected by eementing the layers and fastening them in one of two ways-viz., by headed rivets with washers on the opposite side, or by sections of screw-threaded wire, without heads or washy ers, driven through the layers.
The first method is objectionable, because the rivet-heads or washers slide on the pulley and thereby reduce the friction.
The second method is also objectionable, because, while it overcomes the former objection the wire-sections become loose and permit the layers to separate.
The object of my invention is to secure the advantages and overcome the obj eetions of the aforesaid methods.
It consists in the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 4as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows in perspective a piece of belting embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a section of the same at the line x x.
The two layers A B, of prepared leather, are united by any suitable cement-such as glueand fastened by a series of headless malleable tacks or nails, c, having corrugated bodies and tapering points, driven alternately from .opposite sides and clinched upon the other sides. By this construction the larger ends and the clinched points lie dush with or slightly below the surfaces of the belt. The corrugated body and tapering form prevent their drawing through toward the points, and the clinched points prevent their returning.
I claim- As an improved article of manufacture, a belt consisting of two layers of leather cemented together and fastened by a series of headless tacks or nails, having corrugated bodies and tapering points, driven alternately from opposite sides ofthe belt and clinched on the other, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES T. BODIFIELD. In presence ofy SUMNER NASH, C. l?. HUMPHEEY.
