BUTTO N-HOLE'ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,304, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed February 5, 1887. Serial No. 226,646.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. TRULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-HoleSewing Attachments for Sewing- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in bntton-hole-sewing attachments for sewing-machines, and has for its object to simplify such attachments without any special construction or alteration of the sewing-machine; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the details'of construction and the combination of elements, hereinafter fully set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.
I have shown my improvement, by way of illustration, as applied to the button-hole-sewing machines,which form the subjects of Letters Patent No. 322,811, granted July 21, 1885, to F. Egge and C. J. A. Sjoberg, and No. 347,133, granted. August 10, 1886, to F. W.
Itis to machines of the character shown in said Letters Patent that my invention especially relates;
and it pertains solely to the communication of the desired movements to the oscillator, or to the mechanism which effects the latter.
In order that those skilledin the art to which .my invention appertains may fully understand the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 isaplan view showing my improvement as applied to the machine illustrated in Letters Patent No. 347,133, the feed-bar and the parts operated or carried thereby being omitted for the sake of clearness in properly setting forth my invention; Fig. 2, a bottom view of the same; Fig. 3, a detail broken perspective of the same, illustrating the position of the feed-dog relative to the means which I employ for communicating oscillation; Fig. 4, a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing my improvement in connection with a machine con- (No model.)
structed in accordance with Letters Patent No. 322,811; and Figs. 5 and 6, broken detail perspectives showing different ways in which my improvement may be adjusted in order to obtain the benefit of the full throw of the feeddog.

A is the bed-plate of the attachment, and B is a lever pivoted thereto. In the construction shown at Fig. 1 the rear end of the lever is provided with a pivoted spring-acting pawl, C, which latter is adapted to engage with the ratchet-wheel D, which latter by its operation effects the movements of the oscillator. In Fig. 4 said rear end abuts against the primary lever E, which carries the spring actuated pawl F, by means of which latter the ratchet G is operated to effect the oscillation, as is described in the Letters Patent, No. 322,811, aforesaid.
The forward end of the lever B is extended beneath the bed-plate, as shown at Fig. 2, so that in normal position its inner edge is about adjacent to the nearest lateral edge of the feed-dog H, while at the same time the horizontal plane of said end is such that the lever is within the field of operation of the feed-dog when the latter is performing its second or feeding movement, all of which will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: The attachment is secured in position on the sewingmachine in any well-known -manner, the throat-plate of the latter being removed, since it is unnecessary, because the forward end of the attachment performs the function of said plate. As the shaft of the sewing-machine is revolved, the feed-dog will be thrown upward on its first movement, then laterally against the end of the lever B on its second movement, then downward on its third movement,- and, finally, laterally back to its. normal position on its fourth movement. The lever B is thrown sidewise by the second movement of the feed-dog, and this causes the rear end of said lever to be forced against themechanism which effects the oscillation, thereby operating the same. The lever B is returned to its normal position by means of a spring, I, as shown in Fig. 1, or by the return-action of the ICO lever E, as shown in Fig. 4. In order to pre vent any lost motion between the feed-dog during its second movement and the lever, the latter may be attached to said dog by a pinconnection, as shown in Fig. 6; or the forward end of the lever may be formed in two pieces joined by a slot-and-pin device, and locked in any adjustment by a set-screw, as shown at Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In button-hole-sewiug attachments of the character described, the con1bination,with the ratchet-wheel which effects the oscillation, the cloth-clamp, and means for opcratively connecting the same with the oscillating mechanism, of a lever pivoted to the bed of the attachment and adapted to vibrate horizontally, the sewing-machine feed-dog adapted to actuate said lever at its forward end, and a pawl operated or carried by the rear end of the lever and arranged to engage with the ratchet, whereby the latter is revolved intermittently, substantially as set forth.
