STATION-INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 375,186, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed March 19, 1887.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. NEAMAN N,
a citizen ot' the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Station-lndicatoxs, of which the following is a specication.
My invention consists in a combined station -indicator and advertising device, the novel mechanism of which is fully pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-u y Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section in the plane x x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section in the plane y y, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lever and its dog for actuating the gear which rotates the upper apron-roll. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the bolts and actuating-cord for limiting the movement of the gear-actuating lever. Fig. 5 is a perspective view on a smaller scale than the preceding iigures of the indicator. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a railway-car, showing the indicator applied. Fig. `7 is a sectional end view of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section showing a modification of the means for actuating the roll mechanism.

In the drawings, referring at present to Figs. 1 and 2, the letter A designates a casing .containing the operating parts of the indicator. This casing is open at its front to expose an apron, B, which extends across the open front of the casing and is secured at one end to a roll, C, and at its other end to a similar roll, O', located, respectively, near the top and bottom of the casing, their shafts c c'having bearings in boxes in the casing. Guide or idler rolls D D are respectively located at the top and bottom of the casing and in front of the rolls C O', and said rolls D D guide the exposed portion of the apron B into one and the same vertical plane at the front of the 45 casing.
In the rear of the exposed portion of the apron B and in close proximity theretois rigidly secured a stiff shield or plate, E, Fig. 2, which acts as a backing when names of stations or advertisements are printed upon the face of the apron, so that it is not necessary to Serial No. 231,530. For actuating the apron-rolls C O to shift the apron B in either direction I provide an independent actuating device for each roll, which devices are so constructed that when they are in their normal positionsthat is, at rest-- the rolls C and O are free to be rotated in either direction. The said actuating devices 6o for the rolls C and C being precisely the same in construction and oulyinversely located, the description of that applied to the roll O, Figs.
l and 2, will sufce.
Upon the shaft c of the roll C is rigidly secured a gear-wheel, F, which is engaged by a gear, G, loosely mounted upon a spindle, h, secured in one side of the casing. From the face of this gear G project a number of horizontal pins, g, (Fig. 2, especial1y,) which are 7o v located at equal distances apart-say one in each quadrant. Loosely pivoted to the spindie h and in front of the gear G is a lever, H, which is subjected to the action of a spiral spring, h', coiled in a suitable case rigidly se- 7 5 cured to the spindle h, which spring tends to return the lever H to the position shown in Fig. 2 when it is moved from said position. A dog, I, is pivoted at t' to the lower end of the lever H, whichdog is provided with an 8o arm having a fiat surface, i', adapted to engage with the pins g on the gear G, anda cam-surface, i2, which is intended to be engaged by a stationary cam, I', attached to the proper side of the casing. The second arm, 1'?, of the dog is providedwith an eye, to which is attached one end of the actuating cord or chain J, which cord or chain extends from said eye over pulleysj andj, Fig. 1, and out of the casing. 9o
rIhe cam I is in engagement with the cami surface if on the dog I when the lever H isin the position shown in Fig. 2, and the said dog is below the clrcumference in which the pins g on the gear G rotate, and consequently the roll C is free to rotate in any direction, an'd can therefore move freely when the lower roll, O', is rotated to wind up the apron on itself.
When the actuating cord or chain J is drawn, the dog I is turned about its pivot unroo til its upper arm comes into contact with a stop, h2, on the lever H, Fig. 3, when itis in position to engage with one of the pins g. On further drawing the cord the lever is swung about the spindle l1, and the dog I engages with one ofthe pins g to turn the gear G. On releasing the cord theleverH is returned to the position shown in Fig. 2 by the action of the spring 7L'. f'
To limit the distance through which the lever H is vibrated l attach the free end of the actuating cord or chain to a bolt, L, Fig. 4, which extends into the back of the casing and is guided at its other end in a frame, L. A stop or projection, Z, on the bolt plays between the casing and frame, the distance between the two latter corresponding to the distance through which the cord can be drawn. The cord or chain for actuating the roll C'- is attached to a similar bolt, L,moving in the frame L', common to both bolts.
The above device, instead of being secured to the indicator, can be `attached to any part of the carsay directly baci; of the indicator.
In order to attract attention to changes of the apron I provide gongs lWI M', which are secured in the interior of the casing and actuated by the devices for actuating the rolls C and C. In this example the end of the lever H is provided with a pawl, m, arranged to engage with a spring pressed cranlrlever, N, carrying the clapper N for the gong. The gong M is struck in a similar manner by the lever II of the roll C. The apron, Fig. 5, is divided into spaces,a portion of each of which, preferably the upper, is designated for the name of the railroad stat-ion or street, and the lower for advertising purposes. In practice, I place one such indicator at each end of the car, Fig. 6, and cause the same to be operated either by hand or automatically by suitable means. The latter is accomplished, as shown in Fig. 6, Lby attaching one actuating cord or chain of each indicator-say those J J of the upper rolls, C O, to levers O O, pivoted to one end of the car, which levers O O are vibrated by their connection with long inclined beams l? P, which are depressed against the action of suitable springs by a stationary device located at the station, which device can consist of an arm, Ri, carrying a roller-stud, r, of an elastic material, such as rubber, whereby the apron B is moved to indicate the station. In case of a single track the arms are hinged and a stop, S, is provided, so that the rollerstuds i' will only act to depress the beam when the car is moved in one direction. A similar set Aot' beams, I I), and connections are situated on the opposite side of the car for actuating the lower rolls, C C', of th'e indicator for reversing the direction of motion of the apron B when the car is moving in the opposite direction.
In Fig. S I have shown a modified form of device for actuating the roll mechanism where I .make each beam or lever P in the form of a steel band or spring, the ends of whichV extend into and can move in split boxes or blocks T, so'that the band Ij can be freely depressed by the roller-stud r. The band P is placed eentraliy in regard to the length of the ear, but to one side of the same. The ends of the cords or chains J J of the rolls C C of each indicator are attached to a bar, t, pendent from the band I, and the cords pass over pulleys t', so that y when the hand is depressed both rolls are actuated and both indicators indicate the same station. The cords or chains JJ of the lower rolls, C C', are attached to a similar band on the opposite side of the car, whereby the rolls C C are turned to move the apron when the car moves in an opposite direction. In the ease of express trains passing several stations not intended to be indicated, the conductor or other person in charge can actuate the indicator by means of a cord or chain attached to the beam or lever l? or other part of the device, so as to bring in sight the next station at which the train actually stops, and when said station is properly indicated the rod can be secured so as to hold the lever or beam closely down to the roof of the car, so that it willnot come into contact with the actuating devices at the station passed.
XVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a station-indicator, of a casing, A, the upper and lower rolls, C C, an apron, B, passing around both rolls, a driving-gear, G, for each roll, and a movable lever, H, for each gear, having a pivoted dog, I, said levers by their movement in one direc tion rotating the gears, and by their movement in the opposite direction releasing the gears, subst-antially as described. y
2. The combination, in a station-indicator, of a casing, A, the upper and lower rolls, C C', an apron, B, passing around both rolls, a driving-gear, G, for each roll, a lever, H, for each gear, having a pivoted dog, I, cords or chains for moving the levers in one direction to cause the dogs to engage and rotate the gears, and springs h,for moving thelevers in the opposite direction to release the gears, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a station-indicator, of a casing, A, the upper and lower rolls,C C', an apron, B, passing around both rolls, a driving-gear, G, for each roll, a swinging lever, I-I, mounted ou the aXis of each gear and having apivoted dog, I, and cords or chains for swinging the levers in one direction and to rotate the gears, substantially as-described.

The combination, in a station-indicator, oi a casing, A, the upper and lower rolls,C C, a driving-gear, G, for each roll, a swinging lever, H, for each gear, a dog, I, pivoted on each lever, cords or chains connected with the said dogs to swing the levers and dogs in one direction, and springs L, for swinging the levers in the opposite direction, substantially as described.

6. The combination,in a station-indicator, of a casing, A, the upper and lower rolls,C C', an apron, B, passing around both rolls, a driving-gear, G, for each roll,having lateral pins g, a swinging lever, H, for each gear, having a pivoted dog, I, and cords or chains connect-ed with one end of the dogs to swing the levers and dogs, substantially as described.
7. The combination, in a station-indicator, of the upper and lower rol1s,C C', the apron B, passing around both rolls, a driving-gear, G, for each roll,having the lateral pins g, a swinging lever, H, for each gear, having a pivoted dog, I, provided at one end with the iat surf face z" and cam-surface i2, means for swinging the levers and dogs, and a stationary cam,l, for each dog to act on the camfsurfaces thereof, substantially as described.
8. The combination, in a station-indicator, of the upper and lower rolls,C C', the apron B, passing around both rolls, a driving-gear, G, for each roll,having lateral pins g, a swinging lever, H, for each gear,having a stop, h2,and a pivoted dog, I, provided at one end with the iiat surface and cam-surface i2, a stationary cam, I', for each dog to engage the cam-su rfaces thereof, and cords or chains connected with the dogs for swinging them and the levers, substantially as described.
9. The combination, in a station-indicator, of a casing, A, the upper and lower rolls,C C', the apron B, passing around both rolls, adriving-gear, G, for each roll, a lever, H, for each gear, having a dog, I, for rotating the gears, cords or chains for moving the levers to turn the gears, the levers P,arranged 'on top of the cars and connected with the cords or chains, and an arm carrying a roller, r, for depressing the levers, substantially as described.
10. The combination,in a stationindicator, of a casing, A, the upper and lower rolls,G C', an apron, B, passing around both rolls, adriving-gear, G, for each roll, aswinging lever, H, for each gear,l1aving a dog, I, a frame, L', the bolts L, passing through said frame and casing and having projections l, and the cords or chains .I J', connected with said bolts and with said dogs for swinging the levers and dogs, substantially as described.
