PORTABLE HEATER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,109, dated December 20, 1887.

Application filed March 9, 1837.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, E. BURGESS WARREN, a citizen of the United States,residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Heaters, I

of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improve ments in combined melters and heating devices for asphalt, tar, and gravel, and bituminous substances in general; and it has for its objects to provide a device that is simple in construction, convenient in use, besides being of such construction as to utilize all heat from the furnace thereof, and, finally, to provide a device that can be easily transported from one locality to another by any suitable means for the purpose of repairing street pavements, saving the cost of transporting the mixed materials from the yards. These objects I attain by the'means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in vvhich- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my improved device, and Fig. 2 a cross-section thereof.

In the drawings, the letters A indicate the wheels, mounted upon suitable axles, B, the

forward one being pivoted, as in all vehicles, and on such axles is mounted my improved device, consisting of akettle, G, situated at the front thereof, and a sand or gravel pan, D, at the rear of the kettle. At the rear is afurnace, E, having the ordinarygrate-bars and ash-pan, the top of the fire-chamber being arched, as This arch extends to the front of the fines FF, connecting with a heat and smoke chamber, H, above the arch and below the kettle and sand or gravel pan. I provide a suitable damper, G, for the lines F F, operating alternately--that is, when one is closed the other is open-for the purpose hereinafter described.

The heat and smoke chamber II connects with a smoke-stack, I, situated at the rear of the device. To the front of the furnace is a suitable furnace-door, J; also an ash-door, K.

The kettle has a curved bottom, as is usual; but this bottom forms beneath it an extended Serial No. 230,981. (No model.)

The preferable use of this device is for mending or repairing streetpavements, and in such cases at present the material is mixed and then transported to the work, and oftentimes when received at the work is not in the proper condition, besides the expense of transporting the same. These objections I obviate by transporting the material separate, and mixing same in the proper proportions at the place where the repairing is to be done, or transport the mixed material in the pan, and thus keep it hot, and always have it in the proper condition.

I do not limit myselfto the use of this device, as it would be of practical use for heating tar and gravel for roofs of buildings; also, the same can be used for reheating old paving material, and I am aware of the fact that tar and gravel have been heated at the works in separate receptacles, and this I do not claim, the essential features of my invention being a combined heater-that is, one of itself, being portable and constructed in themanner shown and described. An advantageI secure in placing an arched roof between the fire and the kettle and warmingpan is to protect the same from burning out, as such would be the case if not for the arched roof.

The operation of my invention is as follows:

After filling the combined kettle and warmingpan with the proper mixture or materials, it is transported to the work, where a fire is built in the furnace. The heat and smoke pass into the arched chambers and fqrward to and through the fines into the heating and smoke chamber below the kettle and Warming pan, where it traverses the entire length and passes out through the smoke-stack. It will be seen that considerable heat will be stored in the chamber around the kettle, thereby keeping the material always in a suitable condition. Should the material in the kettle-such as tar, &c.-become melted or in its proper condition, and should I not wish to waste heat, the damper is drawn forward, closing the flue F and opening the flue F, utilizing all the heat I am aware that devices for evaporating sugar and salt have been constructed with a series of pans for containing the liquid to be evaporated, located above but separatedfrom 5 the furnace by an arch or shield to protect the pans from the direct action of the heat of the furnace, and such I do not claim.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters I0 Patent, is-

1. In a portable apparatus for preparing asphaltic concrete for roofing and paving purposes, a fire-pot or furnace located at one end of the same, and a melting-tank at the other end, the sand heating and drying pan located above the furnace, and an arch located between the furnace and-the pan and extending to the melting-tank to direct the products of combustion and cause them to act first and" with greater intensity on the meltingtank and afterward to pass to and act on the sand heating pan, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a portable apparatus for preparing asphaltic concrete for roofing and paving purposes, the melting-tank O and heating-pan D, located above the furnace E, but separated therefrom by means of an arch or fire-wall,

said arch being provided with an aperture under the melting-tank, and a damper for directing the products of combustion through the opening in the arch, so as to impinge on the front or rear of the melting-tank, as set forth.
