ERROR CORRECTION DEVICE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to the field of typewriter error correcting mechanisms. Various methods of correcting typed errors involve cumbersome and time consuming operation for such corrections. No mechanism having an error correction material ribbon for use in a typewriter is known.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides a less cumbersome and faster way to correct errors on the original page being processed in a typewriter. It consists of a mechanism to place an error correction material ribbon in position to transfer error correction material from a correction ribbon over an error on the original page and is adaptable to typewriters in general.
This invention may be better understood from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a plan view of the error correction mechanism mounted on a typewriter.
FIG. 2 is a side elevation with the typing ribbon spool broken away to show details of the mechanism operating means.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Reference numeral identifies the carbon ribbon used in typewriters attached to a supply spool 12 and a take-up ribbon spool 14. Pins 16 guide the path of the carbon ribbon 10 between the two spools l2 and 14. An error correction material ribbon l8 feeds from a supply spool 20 to a take-up ribbon spool 22. The correction ribbon 18 is supported by holders 24 which slide on guide posts 26 to position the ribbon 18 in front of a type guide 27. The guide 27 has a typing opening 28 through which the typing bar passes to strike the typing platen 29. Spools 20 and 22 are positioned on platforms 30 and 32 that are supported by a post means 34 and secured to the typewriter structure 36 by screw means 38.
To correct an error, the typist would first strike the typewriter backspace key to bring the error back to the typing opening 28. Key 44 is then depressed thereby pivoting lift arm 42 to lift holders 24 and the error correction ribbon 18 over the typing; opening 28. When key 44 is depressed follower 48 actuates pawl 50 which in turn moves ratchet 54 to advance the error correction ribbon 18 one space. The error letter key is restruck thereby depositing a layer of white correction material over the typed error. The backspace key is again used to bring the blotted out error to the opening 28 and the correct letter or symbol is struck on the white correction material.
We claim:
1. An error correction device for use in typewriters to correct typed errors comprising: a ribbon having one end connected to a supply spool and the opposite end connected to a take-up ribbon spool; said ribbon having error correction material thereon; slidable means for holding said ribbon; means for moving said slidable means into and out of an error correcting position, said take-up ribbon spool having a ratchet secured thereto for operation by said moving means to advance said take-up ribbon spool; platforms for supporting said supply spool and said take-up ribbon spool, and a pawl connected with one of said platforms and disposed for engaging and moving said ratchet, said moving means including an arm pivotally connected to said slidable means for movement thereof, said pawl connected platform having means thereon for pivotally supporting said arm and an actuating follower pivotally attached to said arm for moving said pawl in response to movement of said am to actuate said ratchet and advance" said take-up ribbon spool.
