ING TOOTH GROWNS.
H. W. WA
INSTRUMENT FORFORM No. 374,382. Patented Dec. 6, 1887.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. WATKINS, OF VVORGESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
INSTRUMENT FOR FORMING TOOTH-GROWNSa SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,382, dated December 6, 1887.
Application filed June 30, 1887. Serial No. 242,929. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. WATKIns, of Worcester, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instruments for Forming Tooth-Crowns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my aforesaid improved tooth-crown-forming instrument. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar View to Fig. 2, with the detachable forming-tools hereinafter described removed from the instrument. Fig. 4c is a ver-' tical longitudinal section taken on line 0 c, Fig. 8. Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical transverse sections on lines a a and b b, respectively, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of one of the aforesaid crown-forming tools; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a gold band or ring, such as is supplied by the market and usually employed in the manufacture of toothcrowns, said figure, as well as the one previous, being shown upon an enlarged scale.
My invention relates to instruments for molding or shaping the aforesaid bands or rings into the proper form to fit the teeth to be capped.
Said invention consists of a series of detachable forming-tools whose working-surfaces are made in a variety of shapes, so that any desired contour may be imparted to the bands or rings by hammering upon the same over said surfaces, and of a supporting-base for holding said tools in position while in use, adapted to in turn be held in any ordinary vise, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to understand the nature and purpose thereof, I will now proceed to describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The part marked A represents the supporting-base before alluded to, and B the formingtools supported and,he1d in position thereby. Said base may be made of any desired shape suitable for holding the forming-tools. I prefer, however, the construction. shown in the drawings, consisting of the central part or body, d, and the arms 6 e, projecting longitudinally therefrom in opposite directions. The tops of said arms are each provided with a central groove, f, and a series of vertical openings, in which a corresponding flange, f, and .pin 9 on each forming-tool fits when the latter are adj nsted to the support, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby holding the same in position for use, while at the same time being readily detachable to readjust them in other more convenient positions,- as required in producing the desired shape of crown. In forming said crowns by the use of my improved instrument the ring or band 7L (shown in Fig. 8) is placed over one of the formingtools B, best adapted to impart the desired shape thereto, and then hammered carefully with a light hammer suitable for the purpose, until the shape said former is capable of producing is imparted to said ring or band. It is then removed therefrom and placed over one of the others and hammered, and said op erations repeated from one to another of the formers until the desired shape is produced.
It will be understood that the band or ring forms only the sides of the tooth-crown, the cap or top being a separate piece, which in practice is brazed to said band in the usual way. Said cappiece may be molded or hammered into shape in like manner to the ring or band, as previously described.
By the use of my improved tooth-crownforming instrument it is obvious that the op eration of imparting the desired shapes to the blank rings and caps may be performed in a very convenient and expeditious manner.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a toothcrown-forming instrument, the combination, with thesupporting-base A, having one or more projections or arms,c,formed thereon, adapted to be held in an ordinary vise, of a series of detachable forming-tools adapted to be held in position upon the aforesaid projections or arms, substantially as shown and specified.
HENRY WV. WATKINS. Witnesses:
ALBERT A. BARKER, WALTER B. NOURSE.
