ROAD-CART.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,633, dated November 22, 1887.

Application filed June 20, i887. Serial No. 241,860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, MoNRoE BARNES, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RoadCarts or Two-lVheeled Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in road-carts, the object of the same being to provide in a road-cart means whereby the horse motion77 heretofore invariably communicated to the body of the cart may be avoided.

A further object is to provide certain appliances by means of which the vehicle may be adjusted and adapted to be drawn by shorter or taller horses without interfering with the plane of the body.

A further object is to provide devices of the above character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use.

With these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of the cart. Fig. 2 is aside view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a side View, and Fig. 5 is a detached View of rocker.

A represents the seat of a cart, supported by means o f the uprights B upon the beams C, the latter being secured to the spring-rockers D by means of the clips E. The rockers D are curved longitudinally and are secured to the frames F by means of the bolts G, passing centrally through said rockers, the bolts being provided between the rockers and their heads with the rubber cushions H, fastened loosely thereon, the object of said cushions being to prevent, through any sudden upward or downward movement of the shafts, the con- (No model.)

To the frames F, at their forward ends, are secured the vertically-adjustable rods I by means of the set-screws J, passing through vertical slots formed in the ends of the rods I. The forward ends of the rods I are pivoted to the shafts K, as shown at L, the rear ends of the shafts being secured to the axle M iu the usual manner. The spring Il is secured to the frames F, the ends of said spring being secured to the shafts K by means 0f the bails I?, connected to the staples Q by means of the links It.

From the above description it will be seen that as the body of the cart rests upon the beams C it is free from rigid connection with the shafts. Consequently, when the cart is in motion the horse or rocking motion is contributed through the shafts to the frames F, Where it is dispelled upon the rockers D, the body of the cart being entirely free therefrom. The shafts are raised, lowered, and held in position by means of the setscrews J impinging against the rods I.

As the construction shown is capable of changes, I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as properly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my inve11tion,wliat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a road-cart, the combination, with the body resting upon suitable beams, of rockers connected with said beams, adapted to receive horse motion thereon and dispel same relative to body of cart, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a road-cart, the combination, with the body rigidly secured to rockers, of braces pivoted to said rockers and cushions on said pivots beneath the rockers, substantially as shown and described.
