G. L. WALTON.
MAIL BAG'FASTENER.
No. 373,321. L Patented Nov. 15, 1887.

GEORGE LOE WALTON, OF'BOUGERE, LOUISIANA.
MAIL-BAG FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,321, dated November 15, 1887,
Application filed October 6, 1887. Serial No. 951,641. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGELOE WALToN, a citizen oftheUnitedStates, residingatBougere, in the parish of Concordia and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mail-Bag Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in mail-bag fasteners; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like ordinary construction, having metallic strips a,
riveted to the upper inner sides thereof near its mouth.
B B indicate the two parts of the sectional cap, which are pivoted at their outer lower ends, I), to the bag A. Around the point of pivoting are suitable strap-irons, b, and the sections B B are each further re-enforced by strap-irons b passing over the outer surface thereof to keep them in the desired shape.
The inner opposing meeting ends of the sections B are formed with slots b through which pass the staples A, secured to the opposite sides of the bag. Hasps G, suitably secured to the top portion of each of the sections B, are adapted to be placed over the staples A when passed through the slots b and secured by passing the shackle of a suitable look through said staples. It will thus be seen that a strong cap .is provided, which is adapted to be securely fastened, and, when desired, can be quickly and readily unfastened.
The iron strips a on the inner side of the mouth of the bag are to prevent depressing the bag below the cap, so that the cap will enter the bag. The outer end of each sectional cap is adapted to extend over the outer ends of the bag to prevent tampering therewith at this point.
By drawing the staples'A together to pass them through the slots 1) in the cap-sections the mouth of the bag is thereby closed.
The construction of my improvement not only provides a safe securement, but at the same time renders fastening and unfastening of the bag more expeditious.
The hasps O overlap at the meeting edges of the pivoted caps, thereby covering the slots therein and strengthening the bag at the point of fastening. It will also be seen that the staples are secured to the inner sides ofthe mailbag, so that when the bag is closed the point of securement of the staples is hid, thereby preventing the removal of the same by evilinclined persons.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination, with the mail-bag,'of the caps 13, hinged to the bag and having slots b in their opposing ends, the staples A, socured to the bag and passing through the slots b and the hasps O, hinged to the caps and passing over the staples, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the bag, the caps hinged thereto, the staples secured to the bag and passing through the caps, and the hasps hinged to the caps and passing over the staples, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. GEORGE LOE \VALTON.
