Description
UNITED STATES l ATENT O FICE.
DANIEL KELLY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRlDGE-TEARERS FOR MUSKETS.
Specification forming-part of Letters Patent No. 37,171, dated December 16, 1862.
i0 aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL KELLY, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Device to be Attached to Muskets and Rifles for Tearing Cartridges; and'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper part of a musket with my cartridge-tearer applied. Fig. 2 is a side View of the cartridge tearer. Fig. 3 is a top View of the same.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and apply my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A is a band of steel or malleable cast-iron fitted tightly to the barrel B of the gun, and having the two horns a a and interposed fleam-like tooth 0 made in the same piece with and standing out radially from it in an upright position, the horns being at such distance apart as to be capable of receiving be tween them the fold of the paper which closes the cartridge.
off Without spilling the powder, which is then poured from it into the barrel.
The horns and fleam-like tooth may be made in one piece separate from the band A, or
other means of attaching them to the barreland hinged thereto in such manner as to enable them to be folded against the barrel when not required to be used.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cartridge-tearer composed of a ringor band with two horns, a a, and tooth 0 between the horns, said horns, tooth, and ring being all made in one piece, and operating as herein set forth.
DANIEL KELLY. Witnesses:
THOMPSON SINCLAIR, G. H. CHASE.
