FRANKLIN `PERRIN, OF CAMBRIDGE,
ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND DAVID C. PERRIN, OF BUNBURY, MASSACHUSETTS;
Specification forming part of' Letters Patent No. 317,113@ dated December 9, 1862.
To all 107mm/ t may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANKLIN PERRIN, of
Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful woven fabric or manufacture, which I do hereby declare to be fully described in the following specification and exhibited by the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top View, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of it.
The fabric is composed of a warp ot' spun thread and a weft ot' narrow strips or bands of palmieaf.
1n carrying out my invention I slit the palmleat' into narrow strips, each being et' about one twentieth ot' an inch wide and ot' auniform width from end to end. l arrange the threads of shade ofthe warp in pairs parallel to each other and without twist, those of eaeh pair being close together, and with the space of about one-third ot' an inch between them and the next adjacent pair on either side. I also arrange several pairs of threads of one shade, s0 that when woven each pair ot' .one warp-except those of the selva ge ed gesmay come equally or about so between two pairs of the other warp. The shades ofthe warps are alternately crossed and a strip of the palmleat' introduced into each decussation and drawn closely up into the same.
In the drawings, (t (t a exhibit the palm-leaf tilling-strips, while b b b b c c c c denote the pairs of warp-threads of each shade of a set of warps.
The arrangement `of the warpthreads in pairs is advantageous both as affording a better support to the iilling with less liability to break it by the sharpness of the bend, and, inasmuch as should one ofthe threads become broken the other will keep the filling in its proper arrangement with respect tothe warps. A i'ahrie so made is Very useful in the manufacture of hats, bonnets, bags, and various other articles. The thread used for the warp may be of either cotton, tiaX, or silk.
I claim- The new or improved fabric or manufacture as made with its warps of spun thread in pairs and its weft of strips ot` palm-leaf, arranged together substantially as described.
FRANKLIN PERRIN.
