Description

(No Model.)
J. G. SHEPARD.
SHAFT COUPLING.
Patented 'Sept. 27, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. SHEPARD, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
SHAFT-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 370,422, dated September 27, 1887. Application filed June 27, 1887. Serial No. 242,580. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, JoHN G. SHEPARD, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Couplings, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a view in cross section on plane denoted by line as m. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the end screws.
The letters a and b denote two shafts whose ends abut, or nearly so.
0 denotes the coupling, which is centrally perforated longitudinally to receive the shafts a and b. From this central opening a radial longitudinal slit or opening, d, extends to the circumference.
The letters 6 denote cross-pieces lying in peripheral mortises made therefor in the coupling.
The letters f denote tapering screws running into the ends of the coupling and through the cross-pieces.
The letter 9 denotes a tapering screw.
The central hole through the coupling, for
the reception of the shafts, is made just a hair smaller in diameter than the diameter of the shafts, so that it may be made to tightly pinch the same. The screw 9, by being driven in, will expand the size of this central opening, so that the shafts may be introduced or withdrawn easily. Then, by running the screw back and driving in the end screws f, the coupling is made to tightly pinch and securely hold the shaft ends.
'I claim as my improvement- 1. In combination, the longitudinally-perforated coupling 0, having the longitudinal radial slit d, the cross-pieces e, and screws f, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination, the centrally-perforated coupling 0, having the longitudinal radial slit d, the cross-pieces e, the tapering screws f, and the tapering screw 9, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN G. SHEPARD.
