SKIIVIMING DEVICE FOR MILK-CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of- Letters Patent No. 370,275, dated September 20, 1887.
Application filed January 11, 1887. Serial No 224,011. (No model.)
perspective view of the milk-can skimming device with the skimming device detached therefrom.
.My invention relates to an improvement in skimming devices for milk-cans; and it consists of a detachable supplementary perforated skimmer having an annular flange so dis- I posed as to rest upon the upper part of the can, so that. the cream in rising will pass through the perforated skimmer and lodge on its upper face, where it can be readily removed by simply detaching the skimmer from the can, and provided at suitable points around the flange with downwardlybent wings, adapted to clasp the outside of the can and sustain the skimmer at any desired height with relation to the millgall of which will now be fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings,A represents an ordinary milk-can provided at its upper part with my skimming device, 13, provided with a rim or flange, b. This device is formed of pressed tin or other suitable material of any convenient size, so as to fit in the upper part of the usual milk-receiving device-such as cans, crooks, &c.--and also having three I wings, O, bent outwardly, so as to clasp the outer edge of the milk-vessel so as to gage the height of the skimming device as may be de sired. The lower edge of this deviceBisprovided with a wire-gauze, D, or finely-perforated metal disk.
Milk is placed within the vessel A,and afterward the skimming device B is placed over the said vessel with the perforated disk or gauze D immersed within the milk at a suitable distance, corresponding with the thickness of the cream usually removed from they vessel used. This of course varies with the depth of the .vessel. The wings O, clasping the outer sides of the vessel A, serve to hold the said device B at any required position. When the cream has risen sufficiently, the device B is removed, and with it the cream which has lodged on the upper part, and as will be noticed this can readily be removed from the said skimmer.
Having described my inventio.n,whatI claim as new is- The within-described skimming device provided with wire'gauze and having a flange to rest upon the upper edge of the can, and the spring-arms O, as described, whereby it can be fitted at any desired height within the can.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 13th day of August, 1886, in the presence of witnesses.
ALICE E. MENDENHALL.
