Description

(No Model.)
T. DALTON. COMBINED CIGAR TIP OYUITTERIAND MATCH SAFE.
Patented Aug. 23, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT rricn.
THOMAS DALTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO RUDOLF SEIFERT, OF SAME PLACE, AND EDWARD ASOHERMANN, OF MILWVAUKEE, W'IS- OONSIN.
COMBINED C|GAR-TIP CUTTER AND MATCH SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368.706, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed May 3, 1887. Serial No. 237,006. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS DALTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Imp rovements in Combined Cigar-Ti p Outter and Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a elgar-tip cutter of improved construction in combination with a 1natch-safe, the whole to be a compact, complete, and convenient arrangement for the intended purposes; and it consists of the novel devices and combination of devices hereinafter described, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective viewof the entire devlce; Fig.2, a longitudinal vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, an elevation of the under slde of the lid-piece; Fig. 4, a section on line 4 4 in Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a cross-section of the match-safe base; Fig. 6, a sectional elevation 13 5 of the hinge portion of the cover.
Corresponding letters in the several figures of the drawings designate like parts.
A denotes the compartment for holding matches, and B the compartment for receiving the severed cigar-tips, both being cast in one piece and secured by screws to upon a wooden base-plate, 0, having an opening below the match-safe that corresponds with an opening, 21,111 the match-safe bottom, and to each side 01' this opening are provided longitudinal ribs or ridges 0, upon which the matches rest, so as to lie hollow for easy grasping with the fingers. Upon or against the rear upper edge of box 13 is secured by a hinge, d, the lid or cover D for the match-box, being a segmental plate connected by arms to the hinge=bar f. This cover D has in its forward portion a semicircular opening, that is just above an opening, h, formed in the front'faee of box A, in such a manner that both o'peningscombined afford an easy entrance for the forefinger and thumb for grasping a match, and between cover D and the forward upper edge of box A is pro- Vided'a sufficient parallel opening the entire length for withdrawing amatch therethrough. 5c An eye-lug,j, is formed to one end of the bottom face of cover D, that engages the point of a screw, it, tapped through the side wall of box A, for locking 'said cover D upon box A. Upon each side opening, 9, at 1, the cover D 5 is serrated for striking matches, and behind such opening gthe cover is .formed with an inclined plane that leads into box B. In the ends of arms 0 of cover D are formed eyes at, and in and between these eyes is pivotally secured a pin, a, in the free end of a plate, E. There are countersunk perforations p in plate E, and guide-strips q are arranged upon the side edges of its bottom face, between which is guided the knifeplate F, which is secured by a hinge, 'r, to the upper end of link-plate G, that, with its lower eyed ends, is pivotally secured between eye-lugs s, forming part of hinge-barf of cover D, and projecting downward therefrom.
The position of pivot-pin a of plate E and of hinge-lugs s of the link-plate G relative to the knife-plate F is such that a vibrating movement of both plates E and G will cause the knife F to reciprocate against the under face of 7 5 plate E, moving past and away from perforations 19.
The hinge-barfofcoverD is provided with a slot, t, for inserting and holding therein one end of a leaf-spring, H, the opposite end of which leaf-spring is passed through a slot, u, of link-plate G, pressing the same upward, and thereby holding the knife-plate F in con tact with plate E, which latter has shoulderlugs '2) butting against the rear edge of hinge- 8 barfiforlimiting theupwardly-swinging movement of plate E, and also of link-plate G. By the above arrangement the knife-plate F will always be held flat against plate E,to have a forwardly-sliding movement on the face thereof when such plate E is depressed in a downward direction, and when released the spring H will raise the link-plate G, and thereby plate E, as far as lugs 12 will permit, whereby the knife F will be retracted to clear the perforations p. 9 5 By inserting the tip of a cigar into one ofthe perforations p, then depressing plate E, the knife F by its forward movement will cut off such tip, which will slide over the inclined p1lar]13e of cover D and will drop into recepta c e 7 Into this receptacle B may be inserted a receptacle, I, made of tin, which can be removed so as to empty it by first retracting screw K and by swinging the cover D backward.
What I claim is-- 1. A combined match-safe, cigar-tip receptacle, and tip-cutter, consisting of the matchsafe A and cigar-tip receptacle B, a lid, D, having arms 6 e, which are hinged to the rear of the tip-receptacle, extending over the matchsafe, and provided with the opening 9, and roughened surface on each side of said opening, and having a projection, j, and pin or screw 7:, let through the end of the matchsafe and engaged therewith, and the tip-cutter mounted between the arms 6 6 over the tip-receptacle, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a suitable receptacle, of the lid D, having a hinge-bar, f, at one end, provided with a slot, t, the pivoted tip-receiving plate E, having knife-guides thereunder and tip-openings, a knife, F, sliding in said guides, link G, having a slot, u, said link being hinged to bar f at one end and to knife F at the other, and the spring H, in-
serted at one end in slot at in link G and at the other in slot t in bar f, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- THOMAS DALTON.
