DRAW-BRIDGE GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,66-6, dated August 23, 1887..

To @ZZ whom it may concern/z Beit known that I, FARDENAD GERARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draw-Bridge Gates, of which the following is a speeiication.
My invention relates to gates for closing the passageways leading to draw-bridges, and it is the object of the invention to provide pivoted gates and operating devices connected therewith and with the draw-bridge, whereby the gates will be opened and closed by the swinging of the draw-bridge.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 vis an elevation of portions of the swinging and stationary sections of a drawbridge, showing the gates and the gateoperating mechanism. Eig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of a portion of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the swinging portion on the line ma of Fig. 2, showing the racks and pinion; and Fig.5 shows devices for operating a stop for the gates.
In the several views, A designates the permanent and B the swinging portion of a bridge of ordinary construction.

D D are the gates on the permanent section, which hang on posts d,so as to lieiiat against the railing c when open. To the posts d are attached the vertical shafts e, which extend beneath the bridge and sustain the miter-wheels f. In mesh with these are miter-wheels f on a transverse shaft, g, which is supported by hangers h. On the shaft g, near its middle, is a mitenwhecl, e', meshing with a corresponding wheel, j, on a shaft, k, extending lengthwise with the bridge and mounted in hangers h. At the end of the shaft 7c, and beneath the swingbridge, is a pinion, l, and on the under side of the swing-bridge are racks m and a. The rack m has its cogs on its under surface, and is supported in position to engage the upper cogs of the pinion Z, and the rack a has its cogs on the upper side and is hung lower by means of hangers h3, so as to engage the under cogs of the pinion. /Vhen the draw is swung from its closed position in the direction indicated by the arrow y, the rack m engages the pinion and operates the mechanism for closing the gates, and when swung back the same rack engages the pinion from opposite direction to open the gates. If the draw is swung open in the latter direction, (that indicated by the arrow 2,) then the rack n is caused to engage the pinion at its under side and operate the devices to close the gates,and upon the draw being closed the same rack serves to open the gates. Similar devices are arranged at the other end of the bridge, (not shown,) but the relative positions of the racks are reversed, the lower rack being placed at the side of the bridge on which the upper rack, m,oftheend shownisplaced,andtheupperrack being placed on the same side as the rack a. This arrangement is for the obvious purpose of having the mechanisms similarly operated by the movements in opposite direction of the two ends of the draw.
The gates may be prevented from swinging too far in closing by stops o, which limit the movement of their ends; or there may be provided in a slot at the middle of the roadway a sliding stop, p, to which is attached a cord or chain, g, running over a pulley, r, and winding on the shaft la to lift the stop, and a weight or spring may be attached to the stop for retracting it when the cord is unwound.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In combination with a drawbridge, the racks m and n, arranged, as described, beneath the swinging section, the pivoted gates D on the stationary section, for closing the roadway and footways, the shafts e, g, and k, and their connecting gearing, and the pinion Z on the shaft 7c, arranged to be engaged by said racks, whereby the gates are closed when the swing-bridge is opened toward either side and opened when the swing-bridge is closed from either direction.
