SEALING ATTACHMENT FOR FREIGHT-CARS.

Be it known that I, JORDAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and usefnl Improvements in Sealing Attachments for FreightGars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable oth- [O ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l isa perspective view ofmy improved [5 sealing attachmentfor freight-cars, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it in position to be secured. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View on line a; m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the casing holding the lead-and-wire seal, seen from the inside.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention has relation to attachments for sealing the doors of freight-cars by means of a shackle-wire, to which the seal has been secured before it is applied to the doors; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such an attachment, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of the side of a freightcar, and the numeral 2 indicates the sliding door.

A plate or casting, 3, is secured to the side 3 of the car near the opening for the door, and has an upwardly-projecting post, 4, which is provided with downwardly'inclined notches5 upon its outer side.

A casing, 6, is secured to the outer side of the sliding door near the latch edge, with its open inner side facing inward and bearing against a sheet-metal plate, 7, the casing and plate being secured to the door by screw-bolts 8 pass ing through the ends of the casing and plate, and being secured by means of nuts 9 upon the inner side of the door. The sides of this casing are formed with vertical and registering slots 10, having enlargements 11 at their upper ends. Upon the inner face of the front side of the casing a spring, 12, is secured,which has its inwardly obliquely-bent lower end, 18, engaged by a staple or bail, 14- the obliquelybent lower end of the spring crossing the lower portions of the slots.

The seal is formed by the doubled wire 15 and the lead seal 16, which is secured to the ends of the doubled wire and stamped or marked in its desired way, the entire seal being finished and stamped before being applied.

Vhen the seal is to be applied, the door of the car is closed, whereupon the doubled end of the wire is inserted through the enlarged upper end of the slots in the casing and slipped over the upper end of the notched p0st,whereupon the wire is slipped down upon the post and in the slots until the portion of the wire within the casing has passed the obliquelybent catching end of the spring, pushing the said end aside and slipping down into the lower end of the slots, where the wire will be secured and cannot be raised to be slipped off from the post, the spring preventing the wire from slipping up in the casing, and the notches in the post preventing the doubled end of the wire from being slipped oft when the other portion of the wire is held by the spring in the lower end of the casing.

The seal of lead is sufficiently large to be prevented from slipping through the slots, and when it is desired to open the door of the car the seal will have to be stripped off from the ends of the wire, and consequently be d cstroyed before the door may be opened.

It will be seen that by employing this style of seal and this attach ment the seals may be stamped and fastened upon the wires before being applied, so that the lead seals may be made accurately and securely held upon the wires, and the seals may be easily and conven 9o iently attached. Saving of time and convenience in attaching the seals will thus be attained by this attachment, and, as the seals may all be made perfect and with the full im? prcssion, there will be no difficulty in tracing any losses in the contents of the ear to the proper place, as the impression of the seal will be suifficiently plain to indicate the last sealing-place.

Having thus described my invention, I claim I00 and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a sealing attachment for car-doors, the combination of a doubled wire having its ends secured in a lead seal, an upright post having notches upon its outer side and receiving the doubled end of the wire, and a casing having a vertical slot in its sides registering with the post for the passage of the doubled wire and of less diameter than the thickness of the seal, and having means at the lower ends of the slots for holding the wire when slipped down, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

2. In a sealing attachment for car-doors, the combination of a doubled wire having its ends secured in a lead seal, an upright post upon the side of the car near the latch edge, and

having notches in its outer side inclined downward for holding the doubled end of the wire, and a casing having vertical slots registering with each other and with the post, and formed with an enlargement in the upper ends and with a suitable spring-catch at the lower ends for retaining the wire when slipped down, as and forthe purpose shown and set forth.

3. In a sealing attachment for car-doors, the combination of a doubled wire having its ends secured in a seal, an upright post upon the side of the car near the latch edge and having notches in its outer side inclined downward for holding the doubled end of the wire, and a casing secured with its open inner side against a metallic plate upon the car-door and formed with vertical slots in its sides registering with the post, and formed with enlargements at the upper ends, a spring secured to the inner face of the outer side of the casing at the lower ends of the slots, and having an inwardly and downwardly inclined lower end and a bail adapted to engage said spring, as'and for the purpose shown and set forth.
