MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,083, dated August 9, 1887.

A is a frame, of iron, wood, or other suitable material. In this frame is suitably mounted a shaft or aXle,B,on which turns a ratchet-wheel, G. The ratchet-wheel'Cis actuated or turned in the direction of arrow 9 by a driving arm or lever, D, swinging on the'shaft B. A drivingpawl, E, is hinged or suitably attached to the arm D. A spring, .15, is attached to the arm D and holds the driving-pawl in engage;

1 ratchet-wheel teeth one pawl-tooth will always be brought into engagement with a ratchetwheel tooth, and the driving-pawl will actuate the ratchet-wheel even if the oscillations of the driving-pawl should be through a less or smaller distance than thelength of one of the ratchet-wheel teeth. If desired, the driving-pawl E can thus be made to impart a slow motion to the ratchet-wheel.
A stop-pawl, G, is hinged or suitably attached to the frame A, and prevents retrograde motion of the ratchetwvheel. To limit or regulate the oscillations of the driving-arm D, I provide a regulator, I. This regulator I consists of a suitable surface, either plane or curved, with which the driving-arm comes into contact, thereby arresting or stopping the motion of the driving-arm in one direction. In the example shown in the drawings the regulator consists of a plane hinged at J to a base or support, L, said plane being held in an inclined position by an upright or arm, K. By providing the arm K with a 2 ceaoae screw-thread and with nuts i 7; the inclination of the plane or surface can be varied and adjusted as desired. The base or support L of the regulator I is adapted to slide or travel in a suitable guide or way, M, in the floor or in a base-plate of the mechanism.
When the lower part of the regulator I is in proximity to the arm D, the arm D is free to oscillate through a considerable space and to impart considerable movement to the ratchet-wheel. As the regulator is moved to bring the higher part of the regulator I to the arm I), the motion of the arm D, and consequently of the ratchet-wheel O, is diminished. The regulator I thus enables the motion of the ratehct-whecl C to be adjusted or controlled as desired. To soften the contact between the arm or lever D and the regulator I, a cushion or pad, j, of suitable soft or elastic materialsuch as leather-may be applied to the arm D.
In the example shown in the drawings the regulator I is automatically actuated. The ratchetwheel G has connected to it a gear, 'N, and by a train of gears, O I Q R S, motion is imparted to the shaft or axle 121, connected to the gear S. An arm or pawl, T, is connected to the shaft an, and every revolution of the pawl T revolves the gear-wheel 'U a certain distance in the direction of arrow 10. To the axis of the gear-wheel 'U is attached a bevel geanwheel, \V, gearing into a bevel gcar' wheel, X. As the gear U is revolved in the direction of arrow 10 the bevel wheel X and its shaft Y and the gear-wheel Z are re volved in the direction of arrow 11. The gear wheel Z is connected to the shaft Y,or mounted on said shaft, and said gear-wheel Z engages with a gear-wheel, p, which in turn engages with a rack, Z, on the regulator. As the gear 1) is revolved in the direction of arrow 12 the regulator is moved in the direction of arrow 13, bringing the higher part of the regulator into proximity with the arm D and gradually diminishing the movements of the arm or levcr D and of the ratchet-wheel.
The gears O I Q R S U are suitably mounted in the frame of the device, and the shaft Y and gear are suitably mounted or supported on the floor or base of the device. A stoppawl,V, suitably pivoted or mounted,prevents retrograde motion of the gear U. To return the regulator I to its startingpoint, it is only necessary to disengage the stop-pawl V from the gear U, when the regulator I can be moved by hand to the position desired; or by connecting the gear U with a weight or spring, 0, which is wound up by the revolution of the gearU, said spring or weight, upon the disengagement of the stop-pawl V, will automatically return the regulator Itoits starting-point. In the drawings I have indicated a coiled spring, 0, one end of which is attached to the frame of the device and the otherend to the axle of the gear U.
In the drawings the driving arm or lever D is shown as being actuated bya cord or chain, q, to which cord or chain a suitable oscillating motion is imparted. The cord or chain q is connected to a hook or eye, 1', on the drivingarm D. Said hook or eye 1' can be adjusted or moved to various positions along the driving-arm I) by a screw, 8, actuated by a fingerbutton, t, and when the proper position of the hook or eye 1* has been ascertained the revolution of the screw 8 can be stopped by a setscrew, it. Said screw 3 engages a nut, r, of the book 1*. The action of the cord or chain (1 on the drivingarm D can thus be adjusted or regulated.
I have found it advantageous to supply means for lengthening or shortening the cord In the drawings is shown an eye or hook, c, engaging the hook or eye r. The eye 0'' is provided with a frame or guide, it, having a recess for a linger-button, f. The finger-button f is tapped for the passage of a screwshanlt, 8, having a hook or eye, ii, to which the cord or chain q is attached. A proper motion of the finger-button f will cause the screw-shank e to be moved so as to secure the proper relation of the cord (1 to the driving arm D.
In the drawings I have shown an example of my mechanical movement applied to a loom, the letter in indicating an oscillating arm as, for example, the batten of a loom-to which the cord q is attached, and fromwhich batten the cord receives motion as said batten oscillates. This motion of the cord q oscillates the driving-lever D and revolves the train of gears. The shaft in of the gear S serves as the take-up or cloth-beam, on which the woven or finished cloth or fabric from the shed a a is wound. As more cloth is wound on the cloth beam or shaft m, the diameter of the roll of cloth becomes greater, and if the cloth-beam m revolved continually at the same speed the circumference of the cloth-roll, as said roll increases,would acquire greater speed but since by my mechanical device the regulator I gradually diminishes the action or throw of the lever D, the circumferential speed of the cloth beam or shaft in is diminished as the diameter of the cloth-roll is increased, so that by a proper adjustment and construction of the parts the cloth-roll can always be caused to turn at a fixed circumferential speed, thus avoiding any breakage or injury in the operation of weaving.
Of course I do not confine myself to the application of my mechanical movement to a loom, butI mention a loom as a mechanism in which my movement can be advantageously employed. I can, for example, also employ my movement in such apparatus as papermills, in case it is desired to roll up finished paper at a uniform speed.
The arm or pawl T is adjustably connected. to or mounted on the shaft m, and can be fixed in position by a set-screw, n. Said pawl T can thus be adjusted to properly engage with the gear U. If it is desired to stop the motion of the gear U, and consequently of the regulator I, it is only necessary to slide or IIS move the arm T into such a position that no engagement of the arm or pawl T and of the gearU takes place. The gear-U and the bevelgears W X, with the shaft Y, constitute an actuating mechanism for the regulator I, and by connecting said actuating mechanism to the ratchet-Wheel G, as shown in the drawings, said actuating mechanism receives motion only as the ratchet-wheel is actuated.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the ratchet-wheel O, the drivingarm D, the driving-pawl E on the arm, the teeth on the pawl, the regulator, comprising a. horizontally-sliding. base L, an incline hinged at one end to the base, and devices for raising and lowering the other end of the incline,and gearing connecting the ratchetwheel with the said base for advancing the regulator to diminish the downward throw of the drivingarm, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the ratchet-wheel O,
the driving-arm D, the driving-pawl Eon the arm, teeth on the pawl, the'regulator,comprising the sliding base L, having a rack, the incline hinged at one end to said base, and means for raising and lowering the other end of the incline, and gearing,substantially as described, connecting the ratchet-wheel with the rack on the base for advancing the regulator to diminish the downward throw of the driving-arm, for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with the ratchet-wheel C, driving-arm D, and driving-pawl E, of the gears N O P QR S, a pawl, T, secured to andrevolving with the shaft of the gear S, the gear-wheel U, actuated by said pawl, the bevel gear-wheels W X, the vertical shaft Y, having the gear-wheel Z at its lower end,the regulator I, having a rack, Z, in gear with the gearwheel at the lower end of the vertical shaft for advancing the regulator to diminish the throw of the drivingarm, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the ratchet-wheel O, driving-arm D, and driving-pawl E, of the regulator I, comprising a sliding base, L, having a vertical screw, K, an incline hinged at one end to said base, and connected at its other end with the screw-nuts i k on the screw for raising and loweringone end of the incline, and gearing connecting the ratchet-wheel with the sliding base for advancing the regulator to diminish the throw of the drivi11garm,.substantially as described.
5. The combination of the driving-arm D, the cord q, the adj nstable connection r, screw 8, and, setting device a, with the ratchet-wheel and the driving-pawl, and teeth on said pawl arranged fractionally in relation to the ratchetwheel teeth, substantially as herein set forth.
6. The combination, with a reciprocating body, w, ofa driving-arm, D, a cord or chain connecting said body and arm,'a driving-pawl, E, on the latter, a ratchet -wheel, 0, a regulator, I, comprising asliding base,L, a hinged incline and means for adjusting the incline, and gearing, substantially as described, connecting the ratchet-wheel with the sliding base of the regulator, substantially as described.
