' BEAM=CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,019, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed August 26, 1886. Serial No. 212,423. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN F. SIMSand WILLARD B. MoRRIs, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful BeamOonnection, of which the following isa specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in beam and girder structures.
The objects of ourinvention are, first, to provide a combined stirrup and clamp for the attachment of tail (or header) beams to a girder; second, todistribute the weight of the tail (or header) beam and its load evenly over all the members of a compound beam; third, to obviate the necessity of coping or fitting the header-beam into the girder; fourth, to eonnect the header-beam to the girderin a strong though elastic manner, which should admit of expansion and contraction without distortion or weakening of the connection. We attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a headerbeam connected to a compound beam by the combined stirrup and clamp. Fig. 2 is aperspective View of the device detached from the beams.

In the drawings the parts are indicated as follows: the stirrup A, clam p B, bolts 0 G,washers or packing-pieces G G H H, diaphragms F F F F, tail-beam orheader-beam E, and compound beam or girder D. t The stirrup'Aisso shaped as to pass under and support the header-beam E, the ends being bent to pass over and partially embrace the compound beam D, and provided with holes for the reception of the bolts 0 O, which pass through the girder D and the diaphragms F F F F, and also through the clamp B, washers or packingpieees G G being provided to fill the spaces between the web of the outside beam, d, and the ends of the stirrup, and the washer or packing-pieces H H to fill the spaces between the web of the inside beam, (1, and the clamp B. The clamp B passes through a hole in the beam E, and is provided with a hole at each end for the reception of the bolts 0 0.
By the use of this device it becomes unnecessary to out away-the flanges of the beam E in order to fit it snugly against the web of the beam d, as is usually done, the beam E butting squarely against the fianges of the beam d. The load of E is also distributed over the several members of the girder, whereas in the ordinary mode of construction the beam E is simply attached by angle-pieces to the beam d, which is compelled to sustain unassisted the weight of Ewith its load upon its lower flange and angle-pieces. The clamp B, which secures by means of the bolts 0 O the beam E to the girder, allows of expansion and contraction of E without any weakening of its connection with the girder. Furthermore, the whole device const-itutes a flexible though strong connection between the girder and tail-beam, peculiarly adapted to resist earthquake shocks.
Having now-described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a beam-connection, the combination of the clamp B with the bolts 0 G, packing pieces G G H H, and the diaphragms F F F F, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
2. In a beam-connection, the stirrup A, secured to the girder and supporting the tail or header beam, and the clamp B, passing through the end of the said beam, in combination with the bolts 0 C, securing the ends of the stirrup to the girder, passing through said girder and connected with the clamp, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
3. In a beam-connection, the combination of the stirrup A, the clamp B, tie-bolts C C, the packing-pieces G G H H, and the diaphragms F F F F, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
