Be it knownthat I, CHARLES D. HAZEN, a citizen of the United States,residingat Martinsburg, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Bending Vood;

J is a spring-strip or bender, provided at one end with a hook, j, which end is designed to fit into the space e between the strips E. When the wedge K is inserted into the groove a beneath the strips E, it engages said hooked end and firmly locks the same in place. The

opposite end of this bender is formed with a hook, L, with which engages the clevis M, pivoted to the grapple stay-brace or bender N, which is provided with a shoulder, N, and a hooked end, 11, and a shoulder, a. The shoulder N of thc stay-brace serves to form a ses cure bearing ior the end of the bending-lever. O is the bendinglever, curved as shown, to correspond with the curvatui-e of the grapple stay-brace, and provided with a shoulder, o, which in practice is designed to engage the shoulder N and forni a purchase therefor.
The operation oi' the deviceis as follows It being our purpose to irst form a mold-board or rightliand handle, the removable block F is placed in the position indicated in Fig. l of the drawings. The spring bending-strip J is then placed in position, with the hook j fitted into thespaee e. The heel of thehandle to be bent is then placed in position within the recess in the block a, and the handle is then pressed against the block F until the fulerumpost I-I can be set in the hole C', which is provided at a point necessary to secure the desired bend or curve to the handle. By thus regulating the position of the post any desired curve may be secured. The handle is then pressed back against the post until the pin f can be set in the hole C nearest to the slot c. 'Ihe key or wedge K is then pressed within the groove a a sufficient distance to cause the heelV of the handle to bear well against the block a. The clevis M of the bender N is then applied to the plate-hook L, and the operating-lever O is applied in such a manner as to cause the shoulder o of the lever to bear against the corresponding shoulder n of the stay-brace. The lever is then forced downward until vthe dcsired bend is obtained, when the locking-pin I is forced into place within the slots of the bars D. The lever O may then be removed, and the bent handle, thus locked in position, is in readiness for kih'rdrying. In bendinga left-hand handle the block F is placed upon the opposite side of the bedplank, its ends are reversed, and the block is turned over, the pins f, which project from opposite sides of the block, fitting in the holes C. The block when thus placed will occupy the position indicated by dotted lines in the drawings. The process just described for bendinga ri ght-hand handle is then repeated, excepting that the post H is omitted and the handle is pressed against the block F until both of the stay-pins can be inserted. It will be observed that in bending a left-hand handle the post II is dispensed with and the pins G- are inserted in the holes C2 and serve to hold the handle in position against the block F.
Having thus fully described my inventon and set forth its merits, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the bed-plank provided with holes C CQ of the removable and reversible block F, provided with pins f, projecting from opposite sides of the block and adapted to the holes C C', substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the bed-plank provided with block a, havingA bifurcated end, and with holes C G and inclined slot c', of the block F, pins projecting from cach side of said block F, and post H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. rIhe combination, with the bed-plank having block a., holes C C', the inclined slot c', and holes C, of the removable reversible block F, provided with pins f, as shown, the relnovable post ll, having a shank engaging said slot, and the removable pin G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination, with the bed-plank provided with block aand holes C, G, and C2, of the reversible removable block F, provided with pins f, and the removable pins G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a device for the purpose described, a spring bending strip provided at opposite ends with hooks, as j L, combined with a clevis engaging said hook L, and a stay-brace carrying said clevis, substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. rIhe combination, with the bending-strip provided with hook L, oi' the grapple staybrace, and clevis M, pivoted to said stay-brace, 95 and a removable lever engaging said staybrace, substantially as and i'or the purpose described.
7. The combination, with the bed-plank recessed transversely, as at D, as described, o( IO@ the bars D', pivoted to said recess, and slotted, as described, the bending-strip J, having hook L, the grapple stay-brace N, provided with hooked end ny and clevis M, and the key I, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. The combination, with the bending-strip J, provided with hook L, ofthe grapple staybrace N, formed with shoulders N and u', the clevis M, pivoted to said stay-brace, and the lever O, having curved end and provided with i ro shoulder 0, substantially as and for the purpose described.
9. The combination, with the bed-plank, of the bars D', pivoted to said bed-plank and slotted, as described, the bending strip J, ii 5 grapple stay-brace N, the clevis carried by said stay-brace and engaging said strip, and the removable key I, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
