Description

(No Model.)
D. K. KEOHANE.
Swan/B02 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL K. KEOI-IANE, OF DEADYVOOD, DAKOTA TERRIITORY.
STEAMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.367,639, dated August 2,1887.
Application filed March 23, 1857. Serial No. 23-2150. (No model.)'
To all whom it 12mg concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL K. KEOHANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deadwood, in the county of Lawrence, Dakota Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steamers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is an improvement in steamers, such as are used to keep hot and some times to cook various articles of food, its object being to provide a steamer of compact form and simple and convenient arrangement, that will keep hot without burning a very large number of different articles, and will cook a large variety of the same; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved steamer. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same passing through the water-gage. Fig. 3 represents a top plan with the cover removed. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the central post with the diaphragms.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the cylindrical body of the steamer, having its bottom preferably of copper, with the convex cover a, of usual construction, fitting into its mouth and provided with a fixed bail, as shown, for the purpose of easy handling.
a a are handles secured to the opposite side of the body, near its upper end, when the steamer is small and designed to be used in transportation. Vhen the steamer .islarge, it is preferably mounted at the center of its bottom on a pivot, upon which it can be turned when it is desired to reach any drawer.
B is a hollow center post having secured upon it the circular diaphragms b b, which, when the post is inserted into the body, divides the interior of the latter into a number of eompartmentsone above the other. Each of the said diaphragms is provided near its edge with a circular series of openings, through which communication is established from one compartment to another.
The lowest compartment, 0, forms the boiler proper, and water is introduced therein through the opening 0 at the lower end of the chute o,
the edges of which are secured to the side edges of the opening and the open upper end of which is covered by the hinged lid 0", as shown.
D D are rectangular openings made in circumferential series, one above another, in the sides of the body A, with the lower edges of the openings in each series flush with the upper surface of one of the diaphragms. Thus the openings in each series communicate with one of the compartments d 11, formed by the diaphragms above the lowest compartment, 0.
E E are drawers, each of which is arranged to slide into one of theopenings D, with its bottom resting upon the adjacent diaphragm. hen the drawer is entirely inserted, the plate 6, that forms its outer end, and which is of larger area than the crosssection of the drawers, and is curved to lie snugly against the convex surface of the body A, prevents the drawer from being pushed entirely within the steamer, and also covers any space there may be between the drawer and the edges of the corresponding opening D, so as to prevent so great an escape of steam at that point. Each drawer is provided with a knob or handle on its outer end, and when drawn outward slides on a horizontal platform, F, secured to the side of the body flush with the lower edge of the opening D corresponding with the drawer and stayed bya brace-plate, f, inclining downwardly and outwardly, to the body. Above each drawer is pivoted a detent-rod, G, with its free end bent outward to form a handheld. \Vhen the drawer is fully inserted, the said rod can be turned down on its front plate to hold it in place.
I is a valve-gage of ordinary construction rising from the lower part of the compartment C for a proper distance to ascertain the height of water in said compartment. \Vhen the water in the boiler is heated it rises therefrom into the compartments (1 at through the openings in the diaphragm b I) and completely surrounds the drawers D, containing different articles of food in said compartment. The steam also rises in the, hollow center post, heating the ends of the drawers which rest against said post and passes from the upper end of the post downward into the compartments.
The steamer being cylindrieahand the draw ers entering into it until their outer ends are flush with its sides,isn1ueh more compact than the steamers in ordinary use, and as the steam surrounds the drawers on all sides it is more effective than the ordinary steamers, in which the steam comes in contact with the bottoms only of the pans.
The steamer as it turns on its pivot is more convenient than the ordinary steamer, as it can be turned till the desired drawer comes in front of the cook. The steamer may be made of any desired size, so as to contain from four to one hundred or more drawers. The drawers, if desired, may have their bottoms perforated.
Having described my invention, I claim' 1. In a steamer for food, the combination of the cylindrical body, the hollow central post within the same, the perforated diaphragms secured to the post and dividing the body into compartments, one above another, the lowest compartment serving as a boiler, the lid or cover, and the drawers sliding through openings in the sides of the body upon the adja cent diaphragms, substantially as described.
2. In a steamer for food, the combination, with the body, provided with openings arranged in circumferential series around it, and
the cover fitting the mouth of said body, of the hollow center post, the perforated diaphragms secured thereto and dividing the interior of the body into compartments, one above the other, the drawers fitting into and sliding through the openings in the b0(ly,'and the supporting-platforms for said drawers attaehed to the sides of the steamer, substantially as specified. v
3. The improved steamer for food herein described and shown, comprising the body A, having the openings D, .and the water-opening c and hinged lid 0' the platforms F, secured to the sides of the body A, the water-gage I, the hollow Central post 13 within the body A, having the diaphragms I1 I) secured thereto, the drawers E, sliding through the openings D upon the platforms F, and the diaphragms 12, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL K. KEOHANE.
