JAMES SCOTT, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
FINGER-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,449, dated .August 2, 1887.
Application filed June 19, 185'6.. Serial No. 205,7IS. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Scorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deliver, in the county ofArapahoe and State of ColoA rado, have invented a new and useful Improvcmentin Finger-Rings, of which the following isa speeilication.
My invention relates to au improvement in nger-rings; and it consists in the combination, with a finger-ring, of the setting and means for detachably securing thesetting to the ring; and it further consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed ont in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a ring embodying my improvements. Fig. 2is an elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional View of the setting and the fastening device for attaching the same to the ring. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the same.
A represents a plain ring, and B represents the setting in which the jewel is secured.
On the under side of the settingis a keeper or guideway, C, in which is secured a sliding detent-plate, D, which is provided with aslot, d, and has a downturned flange or ear,d, at its outer end. At the inner end of its body the plate D is provided with a reduced shank, D,ashoulder, D2, being formed at the junction of said body and shoulders. This detentplate is secured in one end of the keeper snrronnding said shank D', and is free to move back and'forth therein for a slight distance.
E represents a coiled spring, which is located in the keeper and bears against the shoulder of the detent-plate. To the end of the keeper, opposite that in which the de tent-plate is secured, is hinged a catch, F, which is adapted to embrace the ring, and is provided at its free end with a shoulder, f, having a rounded or beveled head. The function of the spring E. is to keep the detent-plate normally moved outwardly from the keeper, and this is effected by its expansive force upon the inner end of said keeper and against said shoulder. The latter is beveled on its lower face, as shown, in order that when it is being forced-into place the free end ofthe catch F will be depressed thereby sufficiently to allow the plate D to pass over it.
The operation of my invention is as follows: In order to attach the setting to thering, it is placed against the outer side of the ring and the catch F is caused to embrace the inner side of the ring, with the free end of the catch bearing against the under side of the detentplate at the inner end of the slot d. The said plate is then moved inwardly sufficiently far to cause the shouldered end of the catch to enter the slot d, and the spring E then moves the plate D outwardly, causing the inner end of the said slot to engage the shoulder f of the catch, and thus lock the free end of the same to the detentplate and prevent the setting from becoming lost from the ring.
A number of settings having different jewels may be provided for each ring, thus enabling the owner to Vary the arrangement of the jewels when more than one is worn in a ring, and to substitute one jewel for another at pleasure, thus effecting an economy of rings by enabling the same band to be used with a variety of jewels or settings.
yHaving thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a finger-ring, the combination, with the ring proper, A, of a setting, B, a latch, F, having an angular body hinged at one end to said setting, and adapted to embrace tightly the body of the ring A, and means for securing the free end of said latch in the setting, substantial] y as described.
2. In a linger-ring, the combination, with the ring proper, A, of a setting, B, a guideway, G, upon said setting, akeeper, D, tting in said guideway, and provided with a slot, d, said keeper having a reduced shank, D, atits inner end, a coiled spring surrounding said shank, and a catch, F, hinged at one end to said guideway, and provided at its other end with a rounded head, forming a shoulder, f, adapted to be engaged by said keeper, substantially as described.
3. In a finger-ring, the combination, with the ring proper, A, of a setting, B, guideway C upon said setting, a keeper, D, fitting in said guideway, and provided with a slot, d,
said keeper having a reduced shank, D', at its l In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 1o inner end, L shoulder7 DZ, :it the junction of my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the body and shank of saidkeeper, said shoulpresence of two Witnesses.
der being beveled on its under face, a coiled spring surrounding said shank, and :t Catch, F, hinged at one end to said gudewzny, and provided at its other end with a rounded head7 forming a Shoulder7 f, adapted to be engaged by said keeper, as set forth. l
