Patented July 26, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE:
7 CHARLES H. SHAFFER, O1 ROOKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF' TO JONES, VVOODRUFF & CO., OF SAME PLAGE.
FlRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIPICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent N 367,323, date July 26, 1887.
Applicafion file(l September 20, 1856. Seriul N0. 214.0Il, (N0 morlol.)
T0 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. SHAFFER, a citizen of the United Staates, residing ab the city of Rockford, in the county of \Vinnebago und State oflllinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following -is a speeifieation.
Tbis invention relates to automatic fire-extinguishers k1iovyn as the dry-pipe system,
employed mainly in buildings, and in 'whic-h a system 0f pipes are distributed through the building t0 supply water when required, and in whioh automatio sprinklers controlled in their Operation by heat are connected with 1 the water-distributing pipes at proper intervals. Its object is to render this olassof fireextinguishers more efficient, and for this purpose 1 employ electro-magnetism in the form kno wn as the elosed electrio cir0uit.
-2 'Ehis application of ele0tr0 -magnetismin connection with the dry-pipe syste'm and its construction and Operation Will l )e hereinafter more fully desoribed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is 2 an elevation of portions of a fire extinguishing apparatus embodying my inVention, and suffi'ciento to illustrate its construction and application. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in seotion, showing the position 0f someof the 0 parts when the electric eircuit is broken; and Fig. 3 shows the 1ine-wire in its supports on fihe pipes in isometrical view.
In the figures, 1 represents a supply-pipe in tended to connect with the water-suppl y. This 5 supply-pipe 1 is provided with a valve, 2, to close the,end of the pipo against the pressure of the water. The valve 2in this instance is of disk form, with its stem supported in astuffingbox, 3, and is hold to its seat by toggle-1evers 4 and 5, Which conneet the projecting end of the valve-stem With a ver'tical yoke, 6, rising from the stufiing-box. The arm 5 of the 110ggle-levers is produced in bell-orank formhav ing a horizontal lever-arm, 7, suppoiting a 5 weight, 8, employed=tg flex the toggle-j0int and lift the valve fromits seat o1 permit it to rise under the 'pressure of the water. A set-sorew, 9, is employed to control, the position of-the togglo-joint connection of the toggle-levers to limit th'em in their adjust'ment sbstantially to a line relatively withtheir position to engage the pole ends 0f the elentro-magnets 15, supported in the case 12. An
adjustable spting, 16, is employed to oarry the 6 5 armature from the magnets when the electric circuit is brokn, and an adjusting-screw, 17, is exnployed 130 limit the outward movement of the armature.
Theconnectingrod 10 is provided with a tappebstop, 17 to engagethe insulating-bushing forming the opening in the free end of the circuit-closing spring 11, to cause it to descend with the downward movement oftho 10d and engage the free end of the oircuitc1osing arm 18, fixed to the magnet-case, for a purpose hereinafter to appeaiz By this comstruction and arrangement of the parts the connection of the trip-lever with the conne'cting-rod and with t-he armature, as shown in Fig. 1, with closed circuit, will hold the valve t0 its seat and prevent the eseape ofwater from the supply-pipe; and with broken or open cireuit the armature will be liberat ed, and the spring-aotion will disengage it from 8: the trip-lever, which will permit theweight t0 carry*the parts to their position, (shown in Fig. 2,)open the valve, and pergnit the water to flow from the supply-pipe.
A system of water-distributing pipes is 0 conneoted with the water-supply pipe, am].
may be distributed through the builcling in whieh the apparatus is eniployed to any extent required. In this instance distributingpipes suffieient to illustrate the application 9 5 and working of the apparats are employed,
and oonsist of a horizontal pipe, 19, oonnecting the supply-pipe with a vertical pipe, 20, provided with an outlet-valve operated by the hand-wheel 21, fixed on the projecting end of i ts valve-stem. A horizontal distributingpipe, 22, is conneoted with the vertical pipe,
able section of the valvecontrolling mechanismand adapted 110 engage the said sbationary arm when Lhe va1ve is opened and form an electrie eireuit through the baltery and alarm,
f the eleebric circuit, substantiaily as seb forth.
5. The coxnbination, with bhe weighted arm 0f the toggle-lever mechanism to the valve and with ehe armature to engage the poles of the magriets, of a trip lever and rod-connection of the armature wi'th the weighted arm of the toggle 1ever mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
G. The combinataion of the trip-lever mechanism cohnecting the armature Wi13h the weighted arm 0f the toggle-lever meehanism of the Va1ve, electro-magnets eleehrieally conneeted With the trip-lever mechanism and With Ehe battery, and aline-wire eonnecting the battery With be watersupply pipes completing the eleetrie circuib, said eircuit having solder-eonnectionsfusibleat; a1ow temperature substantiall y as and for Ehe purpose seb fortb. 7. The eombinat-ion, with the normallyclosed electric cireuit, th e supply and the distribut ing pi pes, of the sprinkler secur'ed t-o the dist-ributing-pipe, and bheinsulating wire-supporting bracket) attaehed to the dist-ributingpipe in a position near the sprinkler, for th'e pnrpos substantially as seb forth.
8. The combination, with the disbributingpipes in a normally-'closed electriecircuib, with a magnet, and with mechanism for controlling a supply-valve, 0f solder-elosed sprinklers seeured to the distributing pipes, insulating wire supports attached bo the distributingpipes near the sprinklers, and solder-connections joining the wire near the braeket-support, whereby the heab which separates 'the wire ab the solder-connecbion will open the Solder-closed sprinkler nearesb thereto, substantially as set forbh.
9. 'lhe combination, wibh the werter distributing pipe in a normally-closed electric circuit and a wi-re having solder co'nnections fusible at; a 10W temperature, the wire being attaehed t0 the distributingpipe by insulabing-brackets, of a sprinkler eonnected wibh tahe distributing-pipe, said sprinkler being provided With a solder-connection fusible als alow temperature t0 liberate the sprinkler, substantiaHy as sei; fort-h. r
10. The combination, with the rod eonnecbing theweighted arm 0f Ehe toggle-leverswith the trip-lever, and with the eircuit3-closing arm t0 the alarm-bell, of a eircuit-closing spring t0 engage he circuib-elosing arm, substantially as and for ehe purpose sei: forbh.
11. The combination, With the supply-valve and the togglelevers f0r operating the valve, 0f the setz-sereW for regulating the adjustment 0f Ehe levers in line wibh their pivotal conneetions; substantially as seb fort 12. The combination, wibh the normallyclosed eleetrie eireuit, the magnetwithin the cireuit, and a water-supply valveheld in closed adjustment; by the armature of the magneo' when in c0ntact w ith the pole, of a springhaving' an adj ustabletensionadapted 130 automatieally release the armatureof Lhe magnet; fr0m the valve-controlling mechanism when the cireuit is broken, and the set-screw f0r determining the throw of the armature, substantially as sei: forth. 7
