UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. OOULTER, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
OIL-CAN AND LAM P-FILLER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,273, dated July 26, 1887. Application filed December 30, 1885. Serial No. 187.153. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH M. COULTER, of the city of Portland, inthe county ofMultno- 'mah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans and Lamp-Fillers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in combined oil-cans andlampfillers; and it conerwise.
cal.
sists in certain novel features hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line as m ofFig. 2, and Figf-2 is a plan view of the device.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A des- -of' the can rests on this flange, and is secured in place by being soldered thereto.
B designates the pump-well, which rises centrally from the bottom of the can and is formed integral therewith, by stamping or oth- In the side of the pump-well, near its upper end, I provide a series of openings, J, through which oil passes into the pumpwell when the can is full. The upper end of the pump-well is closed by a cap, b, secured i thereto in any preferred manner.
G-designates the piston, provided with an external packing ring and working in the pump-well. L is a stirrup bolted to the upper *side of the piston and provided with a central serew-threaded opening, in which the lower end of the piston-rod M is secured. This piston-rod extends through the cap b of the pumpwell and projects through a central opening, 71, in the top of the can, which is closed by a cap, H, when the can is prepared for transportation full of oil. The top of the can is also provided with one or more openings, 2, through which oil is passed into the can, and which are closed by caps I.
In the bottom of the can, around the pumpwell, I provide aseries of openings, D, through which the oil passes to a reservoir, E, on the under side of the can-bottom This reservoir E is secured to the bottom of the can by soldering or otherwise, and a dischargepipe leads therefrom, passing up the side of the can to the top thereof, where it is provided with the removable nozzleG. N designates a plug, which is inserted in the upper end of the dischargepipe when the nozzle is removed to prepare the can for shipment.
O O designate a series of springs having one end secured to the under side of the bottom of the can, and, their other ends are provided with valves P, which are adapted to close the openings D when the piston is depressed.
The operation of my device is obvious and will be readily understood. The can is filled with oil and the piston reciprocated, thereby discharging the oil through the nozzle.
Having thus described my invention, what I I .claim', and desire to secureby Letters Patent,
The improved oil-can and lan1p-filler herein described and shown, comprising the can-body A, having the inlet-openings'i in the top and the openings D in its bottom, the pump-well rising centrally from the bottom of the can and provided with the openings J vin its side, near the upper end thereof, the piston working in the pump-well, the reservoir on the bottom of the can, the spring-actuated valves P on the .under side of the bottom of the can in the res ervoir and adapted to close the openings D when the piston is depressed in the pumpwell, and the dischargepipe leading from the reservoir and up the side of the can and provided with a removable nozzle, substantially as specified.
.IOsEPII M. COULTER.
