FEED MECHANISM FOR SAW-=MlLLGARRIAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,235, dated July 26, 1887.
Application filed J'nne13, 1885. Serial No. 168,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST F. RADANI, of Wausau, in the county of Marathon, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Mechanisms for Saw-Mill Carriages; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relatesto feed mechanism for sawmills, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my device. Fig, 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
A is the base of my machine. A are standards that rise from the base, and are provided with bearings a a for ashaft, B,upon which is provided a frame, .B,in which latter are journaled near one end a shaft, 0, and near the other a shaft, 0. The frame B is a hollow rectangle.
D D are friction pulleys or wheels that are hung between the sides of the frame on shafts G and 0, respectively, and D and D are beltpnlleys that are keyed onto the outer ends of the shafts O and 0, respectively.
Eis the driving-pulley, E the driving-shaft, and E an idler, and F is a belt that passes over pulley E, under pulley D over pulley D and under the idler E.
The pulleys D and D are preferably faced with paper,and are so situated that when the frameB is level they hang over but out of contact with a large pulley, G, that is keyed to a shaft, G, and hangs between the sides of the base A.
One end offrame B is pivoted toa standard,

on the base A. This standard is'made with a yoke, H, the rear of which rests against the end of the base, and which is provided with lugs h 71?, in which are pivoted cogged segments h h", respectively, and between these segments is pivoted between lugs i,that are socured to the end of the base A, (one on each side of yoke H,) a double-faced cogged segment k,from which ashaft, K, extends through a bearing on the frame, and to this is keyed a hand-lever, K.
The operation of my device is as follows: The shaft G is revolved through pulley G,and carries a pinion, G on its outer end for mesh with a rack on one of the beams of acarrier, L. (Shown partly in Fig. 2, with the parts in the position shown in Fig.1.) The pulleys D D, which are belted to turn in opposite directions, are out of contact with the pulley G,and therefore their revolution would not affect it; but when the frame B is tipped, so that either of the pulleys D or D will come in contact with pulley G, then thelatter will be revolved. The tipping of'the frame B is accomplished by means of the lever K, shaft K. and segments 70 h h", as follows: Suppose the carriage L is to be retracted in a direction opposite to that indicated by the large arrow, Fig. 1, the handie K is turned out of a vertical and toward the machine. This, through the segments h h and 7c, will depress standard H, and through that end of frame B, and bring pulley D into contact with pulley G, and as pinion G meshes with a rack on the under side of one of the sills of carriage L, the carriage will be propelled backward, and then,when a cut is to be made,the lever is drawn away from the machine and pulley D,instead ofD,makes contact with pulley G and the carriage is advanced. I make the pulleys D and D of unequal diameters, the pulley D being larger than pulley D, so that when pulley G is being driven by pulley D it will carry the carriage back rapidly, to be moved slowly forward when pulley D comes in contact. The bearings of shaft B are made adjustable to facilitate the centering of theframe B.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
In saw-mill feed mechanism, the combination, with a suitable base and standards, of a shaft supported by the latter, and a rectangular tilting frame carried by said shaft, a vertically-movable end standard pivoted at its upper end to said tilting frame,a pulley keyed to the feed-shaft, and friction-pulleys belted to run in opposite directions and supported within the rectangular tilting frame just above and normally out of contact with the pulley on the feed-shaft, substantially as set forth.
