PHOTOGRAPHiC-PAPER-ROLL HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,176, dated July 26, 1887.

To aZZ whom it mar concern;
Be it known that I, ERASTUS B. BARKER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Paper-Roll Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to holders for photographic sensitized paper ortissue in which rollers for supplying and taking up the paper are used in a box or case that takes the place of an ordinary plateholder in a photographic apparatus, said rollers usually acting in concert with an outside indicator, and serving to feed the paper in measured quantities for a series of exposures in succession upon opening or removing a shutter for the purpose.
The invention consists in certain constructions and combinations of parts in such cases or holders, including a movable frame for carrying the rollers and paper, made removable from the box or case to facilitate the putting on and taking off the paper or changing the rollers which carry the same; also, devices controlled by the application or removal of pressure on closing and opening the lid of the case for making and breaking connection with the indicator which controls the measure of the paper as it is unrolled for use, certain means for securing the roller-carriers when in place and for giving tension to the paper between the rollers, and a novel construction of either roller for attaching the paper thereto with little or nowaste, substantially as hereinafter shown and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective, as seen from the front, of my improved photographic'paper-roll holder when opened and showing the frame which carries the rollers as drawn out of the box or case. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the holder closed, and Fig. 3 a central transverse section thereof. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal section of the rollercarrying frame with certain attachments, but omitting the supply and take-up rollers carried by it. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of said rollers, together with a plate which fits on the end thereof, detached; and Fig. 6, a transverse section of such roller. Fig. 7 is a detail view of certain ratchet-and-pawl devices for controlling the action of the take-up roller. 'A indicates the box or case of the holder, having a front open-faced lid, A, which is fitted with the usual sliding or other exposingshutter, B. Said box, for convenience sake, is divided into three compartments-that is to say, a central one, a, and opposite end ones, b b. The end compartments serve respectively to receive within them the paper supply and take-up rollers O O, which are or may both be constructed alike, to admit of them being interchanged. The center compartment, a, serves to contain the mechanism for operating the indicator D, that, when the case is closed, determines the quantity of paper fed from the supply-roller at any one time to make the full negative or picture, and which indicator is here arranged upon the back of the case A, the same being a much more convenient position for inspection than the side of the case.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings the roller 0 at the left hand of the case is the supply one, and the roller 0 at the right hand thereof the take up one. These rollers O O are not carried by the case direct, but by an independent and removable frame, which is entered within the case from the front side thereof when the lid A is opened for the purpose, and which is composed in part of the table or board E, on and over which the portion of the paper a to be exposed lies. By using an independent and removable frame for carrying the paper supply and take-up rollers O O greater convenience is afforded for changing the rollers and for putting the paper on and off them. Said frame, too, is loosely fitted within the case, so as to be capable of moving backward and forward therein in concert with markingwheels F F, so that on opening the lid of the case, which when closed bears on said wheels, connection between the indicator and the mechanism operating the indicator is broken, in order that the indicator may be independently adjusted, and the wheels F F, which, projecting through the board E, are moved by the passage of the paper over them, and are provided with prickers d d, for marking the paper where it is necessary to sever it after exposure, may be set to register with the indicator. To thus provide for making and breaking connection with the indicator accordingly as the lid A is opened or closed, and to insure a proper contact of the marking-wheels F F with the paper when the board E is inserted to its place in the case, the shaft G, on which said wheels are arranged, and against which the board E rests, is made capable of sliding in or out within grooves e e in the sides of the case, and is pressed outward by one or more springs S, that serve,when the lid A is closed, to keep the marking-wheels F F in contact with the paper and to admit of connection between them and theindicator. \Vhcn the lid A, however, is opened and its pressure on the wheels F F is removed, then the spring or springs S force the shaft G outward and disconnect the indicator-operating wheel H on it from driving contact or gear with another wheel, I, on the indicator-shaft J. Thus connection is established and broken by pressure applied to and removed from the interior mechanism of the case on or by the act of opening and closing the lid of the case.
The wheels H and I may either be plain friction ones or toothed wheels, and may be variously proportioned; but by making the wheel H half the diameter of the wheel I the shaft G will make two revolutions in the feed of the paper for one revolution of the shaft J and its attached indicator D.
The shaft G may have a sleeve,f, on it, provided with a guiding-socket, g, for said shaft, serving also as a rest for the board E and as an inner box for theindicator-shaft J, over which the wheel I is represented as fitted and as engaging with an angular portion of said shaft, subject to adjustment by a sliding collar, h, arranged between the wheel or its boss-like extension and an outer fixed bearing, 2, for the indicator-shaft; but the construction of these parts may be changed at pleasure.
The plate orboard E of the removable frame which carries the paper-rollers O O is provided with anti-friction rollers s s at its opposite ends for the paper 0 to run over. The rollers G G are indirectly connected with the paper table or board E by means of removable bent bar or strap like carriers K, composed of a longitudinal strip, k, and end legs or arms,ll, that form bearings to and serve to hold the roller in between them; butthe longitudinal strip or main part is of each carrier being not only removably fitted in a groove, m, across the back of the board E, to provide for the detachment of the roller and its carrier, as required, but said strip is made of a thin piece of spring metal capable of torsion. This provides for the ends Zof the carrier being sprung or rocked in or out, as shown by dotted lines at the right hand of Fig. 4, to give the desired tension on the paper, in order that the paper may be flat and even upon or over the outer surface of the board E. hen the carriers K are in their place in the frame or board E, they may be held therein by locking slides L,
either made, as shown at the left hand of Fig. 4, to pass within a keeper, a, secured to said board, or to only pass back of the strip 7a of the carrier, as shown at the right-hand of said figure, and so that, and by making said slides of elastic metal, the catches or slides will in themselves form springs to provide for the rocking of the carriers to secure the necessary tension on the paper, and such springs may be the only ones relied upon for this purpose; but I prefer to combine them with the strips 71', made capable of torsion, as described.
The paper-carrying rollers C have their bedies of sectional construction throughout their length, substantially as shown in Figs. and 6 of the drawings, the same being composed of a main part, a, and a movable sectional part, I), constructed to break the continuity of the circular figure of the roller, so as to leave a longitudinal opening, 0, for entry and hold of the end margin of the paper therein, and to provide for detachment of the paper when required.
The movable section b of the body of the roller is free to turn on or with a screw or pivot, d, at each end of the body, which screw fits within a socket, e, on an end plate, f, secured on each end of the body. This serves to hold the body-sections of the roller together, and to admit of the section b opening and closing to enter and hold or release the paper, as required, a spring, 8, interposed between the sections a 1), serving to close the section b on the paper and to hold the paper between said section and the section a at the slit or opening 0'. By turning the section 1) against the pressure of the spring 8 the opening a is enlarged, to admit of the entry or release of the paper.
If desired, teeth 9 may be provided on either of the meeting side surfaces of the opening 0 to give additional hold on the paper, said teeth or prickers entering pockets in the adjacent section of the roller. The sockets e in the platesf are ofangular construction internally, to admit of a key engaging with one of them on the one or take-up roller 0 for the purpose of setting or feeding the paper, as required.
A pawl-and-ratchct mechanism may be combined with the takeup roller to hold said roller from back movement, the same consisting, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7, of a box, h, on the outside of the case, adapted to admit of the key 3 passing through a freely-rotatable socket, k, on a ratchet-wheel, Z, controlled by a pawl, m,- but this forms no part of the present invention. The sectional opening and closing construction of the rollers O G, controlled by a spring, as described, not only provides for the quick and easy entry and release of the paper, as required, but necessitates only a small fold or lap of the paper when engaging with the rollers to give afirm hold on thepaper, thus admitting of nearly the whole length of the paper being used up, and avoiding waste.
Instead of the registering prickers or markers d on the wheels F for marking the paper IIO where it requires to be severed, any suitable marking or printing devices may be used. Furthermore, the sections a b of the papercarrying rollers may, if desired, be made to move with sufficient friction, or, rather, the adjustable section 1) thereof be so controlled in its movement as to render the spring 8 unnecessary for holding the sections closed when gripping the paper; but a spring or springs between the sections will be found generally preferable.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In photographic-paper-roll holders, the combination, with the box or case, of a removable frame for carrying both the paper supply and take-up rollers of the holder, composed of the removable board or table E, over which the paper to be photographed passes, and of separate carriers K K for said rollers, made separately detachable from said removable table or board, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the board or table E, of the separately detachable roller-carriers K K and the separately-detachable papersupply and takeup rollers adapted to rotate within said carriers, essentially as described.
3. In a roll-holder, the combination, with the board or table E, of the detachable carriers K, for the paper supply and take-up rollers, composed in part of an elastic strip, 7c, capable of torsion or twist, and the locking slides or catches L, adapted to secure said carriers to said board, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the board or table E and the separately detachable carriers K, for the paper supply and take-up rollers, of the elastic slides or catches L, arranged to engage with said boardand to hold said carriers thereto, but left free of theboard at their ends which support or hold the carriers to their places, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
5. In photographic-paper holders, the combination, with the box or case and a movable or loose frame carrying both the paper supply and take-up rollers, an indicator adapted to be actuated by the paper when in motion, and mechanism for operating said indicator, of spring-supports adapted to throw said mechanism in and out of gear with the indicator, essentially as and for the purposes specified.
6. The combination, with the box or case A, of the marking-wheels F F, theshaft G, capable of forward and backward movement within said case, the wheels H I, and the indicator-shaft J, substantially as specified.
7. The combination with the box or case and its lid, of the markingwheels F F, a spring or springs for pressing the same outward, an indicator applied to the box or case, and gear establishing and breaking connection between said wheels and the indicator on applying or removing pressure to or from the markingwheels by the opening and closing of the lid of the case, essentially as described.
8. The papercarrying rollers 0, having their bodies composed of a longitudinal main section, a, and an .opening and closing longitudinal section, b, of broken circular continuity with the exterior of the main section, in combination with the end pivots d of the opening and closing section arranged in concentric relation with the body of the roller, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. The combination, with the main section c of either roller 0, the opening and closing section b of broken circular continuity with the exterior of the main section, and the pivots d of the opening and closing section arranged in concentric relation with the body of the roller, of a spring applied to said sections and operating to close the pivoted sec tion I), essentially as herein set forth.
10. The combination of the end plates, f, having sockets c, with the pivots d, the opening and closing roller-section 11, carrying said pivotsin concentric relation with the body of the roller, and the main roller-section a, substantially as specified.
ll. In aroll-holder, the paper-carrying rollers 0, having their bodies composed of longitudinal sections a 12, adapted to open and close in relation with each other, in combination with a spring arranged to close the one body-section against the other for retention of the paper in between them, essentially as described.
12. The combination, with the opening and closing body-sections a b of the paper-carrying roller or rollers, of the spring 8, the screws or pivots d, and the socketed end plates, 7', substantially as specified.
13. In a roll-holder, a registering-wheel placed intermediate the rollers of said holder and pressed by means of a spring against the sensitive film, in combination with an indicating device.
