UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
Y GEORGE w. MEHAEG, OE VINoIT, MIssoUEI.
PROTECTOR FOR BRICK FIRE-PLACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 367,154, dated July 26, 1887.
Application filed January 29, 1887'. Serial No. 225.895. (No model.)
To all whom it 'may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MEI-Inno, of Vincit, in the county of Dunklin and State of Missouri, have invented a new and. Improved Protector for Brick Fire-Places, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. A
This invention relates to a novel form of brick fire-place protector, the object of the in` vention being to prevent the re from resting against the brick-work of the fire-place, and to so construct the protector that it may be adjusted for use in fire-places of different size.
To the end named the invention consists of two end frames that are connected by right and left hand threaded. screws, as will be here inafter more fully described, andspeciiically pointed out in the claims. l 4
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of` reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a face View of my improved form of iire-place protector; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, representing the protectoras it appears when applied for use in connection with the hre-place, the back andjambs ofthe tire-place beingshown in section.
In constructing such a protector as the one illustrated in the drawings above referred to, I provide two outer standards, 10, to which there are connected several rearwardly-extending bars, 11, which bars are bent at 12, as best shown in Fig. 2. Central standards', 13,r serve as the supports for the approaching ends of the bars 11, and [these standards 13 are formed with threaded apertures that are arranged to receive two or more screws, as 14, 15, and 16, which screws are formed with right and left hand threads and with central heads, 17. Iam-nuts 18 are arranged in connection with the screws, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In order that the exposed surface of the central standards, 13, may be reduced to a minimum, I prefer to form said standards so that they shall be substantially triangular in crosssection, the forward edge of the standards being the apex of the triangle.
In adj ustingvmy protector I place i-t as indicated in Fig. 2, the screws arranged between the standards 13 being turned so as to force the forwardlyextending arms of the bars 11 hard against the 'jambs of the fireplace, and
' after the protector has been so adjusted the nuts 18 are turned to bind the parts to place. Having thus fully described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters.
Patent- 1. A re-place protector consisting of two sections each made up ot' posts or standards 10 and 13 and horizontal bars 11, connecting devices being,r arranged between the posts or standards 13 of the two sections, substantially 'as described.
2. In a fireplace protector, the combination, with vertical posts or standards 10 and 13, of horizontal bars 11, held by said standards, and adj Listing and connecting screws ar ranged to engage with the standards, substan tially as described.
3. In a fire-place protector, the combination, with posts or standards 10 and posts or standards 13, that are substantially triangular in cross section, and horizontal bars 11, connecting the posts or standards 10 and 13, of screws arranged to engage with the standards 13 and jam-nuts carried by the screws, substantial] y as described.
