and I do hereby declarev the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the.
art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this improvement is to pro vide a middlings-purifier of simple and economical construction and rapid and efficient operation. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same partsin the different views.
Figure 1 is a plan representing a bolting and purifying machine embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a partially sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 isa transverse section taken on the line a: :r of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa detail plan view of one of the sieves, with parts removed that are fully shown in other figures. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section of the same taken centrally. Fig.6 represents an inverted section thereof. Fig. 7 is a sectional detail representation.
A is the supporting and inclosing frame, consisting of suitably-connected upright and transverse beams, as more fully shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
A A are the top and floor of the same.
B B B B represent doors secured to the upright frame-pieces by means of hinges b bib 1).
The upright frame-pieces are made to support a series of circular sieve-frames, l 2 3 4, one above the other, as hereinafter explained. These sieve-frames carry sieves of different texture, the upper one being the coarsest, the next being finer, and the lowest being the finest and of a texture adapted to operate as a purifier.
As fully shown in Figs. 3, 4., 5, the sieveframes are each composed of a frame, O,a transverse rib, d, an inner frame, transverse pieces 0 c, suitably secured to the frames 0 G. by screws or otherwise, as indicated at 0 and with a central perforation, 0, fora pur- Serial No. 309.427. (No model.)
I pose hereinafter set forth. The sieve-screens G are secured to their respective frames by means of circular frames 0 fixed to the frames 0 O by screws 0", as shown in Fig. 6, or by other suitable or additional means, as may be deemed advisable.

I G is a vertical shaft having at its'lower end a metal bearing, 9, fixed to the floor A of the inclosure, from whichit extends through the top of the same sufficiently tobe provided with a pulley, g, in line with the pulley D on the shaft D.
G G (7: G represent curved portions or cranks made integral with or fixed to the shaft G in positions adjacent to and in line with the sieve-frames 1 2 3 4. Each of the sieve-frames is provided, in the positions shown in Fig. 3, with a plate, H, having a curved projection, h, at one end, and a plate, H, having opposite projections, h h", for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The plates H H are riveted or otherwise fixed to the sieve-frames.
K is a light spring, bolted, as shown at k, to the inclosurc-wall B, immediately opposite each of the plates H, and extended thence in a manner adapted to engage with the projections h of the plates H.
L is a light spring, bolted, as shown at p, to the door B, immediately opposite eachof the plates H, and extending thence in a manner to engage the projections h of the plates H, the parts h of which project therefrom sufficiently to be engaged by the arms of the shaft G, as
indicated at G The shafts G and D are .connected by a belt, 1?. (Shown in Fig. 1.)
R R R represent brushes made either of line steel wire, bristles, or other suitable material, and secured to the shaft D in positions for suitably engaging with the sieves of the sieve frames 1, 2, 3, and 4.
The shaft may be provided with an additional brush suitable for engaging with the sieve of the sieve-frame t, ifdeemed advisable. The brushes are secured to the shaft D by means of straps R, fixed thereto by bolts and adapted to fit the shaft, as shown in Fig. 7. The straps R are arranged to movably fit the shaft D, and are provided with set-screws S a, by means of which the brushes maybe rigidly but ad j ustably secured in position adapted for suitable engagement with the texture of the sieves.
The stock is introduced into the upper sieve through a conduit 8. The shaft D is put in motion bya pulley. (Not shown.) Motion is communicated to the shaft G, in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 3, through the belt P, connecting the pulleys D" and When in motion, the cranks G G G of the shaft G will engage the projections h of the plates H, fixed to the sieve-frames, and the projections h of the plates H will be driven against their corresponding springs, L, fixed to the door B.
When the cranks of the shaft G passthe plate projections h the springs L will impart quick reverse motions to the series of sieveframes, which, by reason of being mounted on I the rollers F, will be easily moved, and the force of the springs L will cause the projections it of the plates H to engage with the springs K, fixed to the wall B, and the springs L and K will cause a forcible shaking of the sieve-frame that will cause the rapid passage of the flour through the sieves, which operation will be additionally facilitated by the brushes R, which will revolve with the shaft D, and by engaging with the entire texture of the sieves prevent the same from clogging. The shaking of the sievc-fran1es, as described, will cause the lighter and inferior elements of the stock to work upward and a tendency to accumulate at the transverse ribs (1. The mechanism is to be provided with a suctionfan arranged to com m unioate through the floor A with the sieve-frames through their central openings and draw off the lighter and inferior elements of the stock as theyare separated from the flour, which will becomemorc and more purified as it passes from one sieve to another. The lowest sieve-frame is provided at one side with a spout, (shown at Q, in Fig. 2,) and through which the valuable inferior elements reaching the sieve through those above will be exhausted, and may be directed, as desired, through a suitably-arranged conduit communicating with the spout Q.
By reason of the wallsB B BH being hinged to the uprights of the frame, the interior parts j of the mechanism are conveniently accessible for removal and repair or other purposes, as occasion may require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved middlings-purifier, comprising the supporting-framc provided with bars a, and having the hinged doors B B B B B, the shaft D, the sieve-frames it 2 3 4, provided with rollersF and plates H H, the brushes R,
having straps R for adjustably holding them upon the shaft D, the shaft Gjhaving cranks G for engaging the plates H H, and the springs K L for returning said sieve-franies when struck by the cranks, substantially as described.
