ARMATURE FOR DYNAMO-ELECTRIC MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,080, dated July 26, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MERLE J. WIGHTMAN and OSCAR URBAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Arnlatures for Dynamo-Electric and other Electrical Machines, of which the following is such afull,clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which itappertalus to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to meansfor more effectually insulating and ventilating the coils of an armature adapted to be used with the machines referred to above.
The object of the invention is primarily to keep the armature from becoming overheated, and to enable an increased air contact at points of the armature-coils,where most heat is likely to be developed, by partially or wholly separating the coil-sections at the ends of the armature by air-spaces; and it has also for its object the insulating of the coils of one system from the coils of the other system in an armature.
The invention consists in providing airspaces more particularly at the ends of the armature between the coils, whereby, as the armature is rotated, the air within said spaces 1s put in motion and displaced; and it consists, also, in details of construction whereby the foregoing results are accomplished.
In the accompanyingdrawings, forming part .of this specification, in which the sameletters of treference indicate the same parts throughon Figure 1 is a side View of our invention, showing the coils and parts holding the same in position on the core and shaft in cross-section, and Fig. 2 is an end view of our invention. The armature shown in the drawings is of the cylinder form, and is made up of two systerns of coils, C and 0*, each having two independent coils, a b and a b", respectively, the coils in each system C and 0 being wound at right'angles to each other, those of the second system wound upon the cylinderin the spaces between the coils of the first system. The invention is not necessarily confined to an armature having such an arrangement of coils, but
rubber-is slipped over the shaft S, carrying the core A of the armature. A circular plate, 1), is placed over this washer, and has metal strips 12 secured thereto. These strips sustain at their outer ends a ring of wood or otherinsulating material. Upon this plate 1) and ring 1" are wound the coils of the outer system, 0*, as shown in the drawings. By this construction the two systems are completely insulated from each other, and air-spaces are left at the ends of the armature between the coils, and as the armature rotates a cooling action is ob tained by the circulation of the air beneath the plate 12. The two coils a b and a? b of each system are also partially separated by air-spaces, as shown in the drawings, thus contributing to thegeneral purposes of the invention.
Having now fully described our invention, we wish to have it known that we do not limit ourselves to the exact construction and arrangement shown, as the same may be varied without departing from our invention; and we reserve to ourselves all changes within the scope of the same and the right in practice to make any changes within the scope of what we now desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States, which is- 1. A rotating armature for an electromagnetic or magneto-electric apparatus having coils of wire wound thereupon, separated longitudinally at the ends constituting air-spaces from the axis between said coils at the ends of the armature, for the purpose described.
2. A rotary armature of the cylinder type, having coils of wire wound thereupon longitudinally, separated longitudinally at the ends, making air-spaces for ventilating purposes at the ends of the armature.
3. A rotary armature for an electric apparatus, two different systems of coils wound thereupon, longitudinally separated at the ends, making air-spaces at the ends between the two systems for Ventilating and insulating purposes.
t. A rotary cylindrical armature for electric apparatus, consisting of a core, a shaft carrying the same, two coils of wire wound thereupon at right angles to each other, constituting together one system of coils, another system like the first wound upon the cylindrical portion of the armature between the spaces left by the first system, and means for separating the two systems from each other at the end of the armature, for the purpose set forth.
5. In a rotary cylindrical armature for a magneto or dynamo machine, an armaturecore, and a system of coils wound thereon, said coils at their crossings at the ends of the armature being separated by air-spaces.
6. The combination, in an armature, of the coreA, the shaft S,earrying the same, two sys tems of coils, C G", wound thereabout, the washer w,embracing the shaft between the two systems, and the plate 12, resting upon the washer, for maintaining the coils O of the second system in the position shown.
7. The combination, in an armature, of the core A, thelshai't S, carrying the same, two
systems of coils, O 0*, wound thereabout, the washer w, embracing the shaft between the two systems, the platep, resting upon the washer, for maintaining the coil 0 of the second sys tem in the position shown, the insulating-ring 'r, and means for holding the same in position and securing it to the plate.
8. The combination, in an armature adapted to be used with a motor, dynamo, or magneto machine, of the core A, the shaft S, upon which the same is mounted, the two systems of coils C G", wound thereabout, as described and shown, the washer to, embracing the shaft between the two systems, the circular plate 1), resting upon the washer bearing the second system of coils O", the insulating-ring 0-, and non-magnetic strips 1), for securing the latter to the plate, whereby an air-space is left for insulation and ventilation between the coils of 50 the two systems, and the same are held firmly in place.
