MACHINE Fon MAKING WATCH-CASES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,778, dated July 19, 1887.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known thatl I, EDOUARD KELLER, of Bienne, Switzerland, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Making Vatclr Cases, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to mechanism for turning over the edge of a disk of metal, so as to give the blank the form suitable for being acted upon by dies that give it the finished shape of the watch-case. I accomplish this by means of grooved rolls supported in stock s fitted to slide radially in a stationary face plate, and said slides are moved gradually toward t-he center of the blank, thereby causing the grooved rolls to act upon the edge ot' the metal blank and roll over said edge as the blank is rotated, and give to said edge the saine shape as the sectional shape of the groove of the rolls. The blank is clamped between heads while being rotated, and these heads are upon shafts on the saine axial line, and they can be adjusted by screws to clamp the blank in the proper position for being acted upon by the rolls.
In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of the complete machine, with some of the parts in elevation. Fig. 2 is a front elev tion, and Fig. 3 a rear elevation, of the faceplate and (onnect-ed parts, the shaft being in section in Fig. 3. Fig. 3^ is aperspectivc view of one of the stocks and its roll. Eig. 4 is an elevation in larger size, showing one of the grooved rolls as acting upon the blank, the latter being in section and clamped between the heads. Eig. 5 is an edge View of the blank before being operated upon and a section of the blank with its edge turned over. Eig. 6 is a sectional elevation of the dies for giving to the blank its finished shape, as shown in this figure. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 are elevations and sectional views ofseparate parts ofthe machine.
P is the base of the machine, upon which are the standards L L', having tubular bearings L2 L3 for the shafts J J. These shafts are upon the same axial line, and are rotated at the same Vspeed by belts applied to the pulleys K K.
Said shafts J J have heads It k', respectively, between which the blank of metal to form the watchcase is clamped, and these heads are each upon a short stud entering a hole in its shaft, so as to be removable therefrom and allow of the use of different-sized heads in the same machine.
O O are screws, with their inner plain ends entering the outer ends of the shafts J J', respectively, and N N are nuts for rotating said screws and moving said shafts endwise, so as to firmly clamp the blank between the heads k 7c', and also to bring the blank to the proper posit-ion for being operated upon by the grooved rolls g. The inner end ofthe tubular bearing L2 is reduced in diameter to receive the tubular hub a2 of the faceplate A, and said plate and hub are keyed at Z to said bearing, so as not to turn thereon. Upon the hub al is the stock-mover B, having a circular range of teeth at B, and upon a cylindrical portion of B is the eye D o f a lever, D', which latter carries a pawl, E, pivoted at E, that engages with the teeth B. The nut C, screwed upon the end of the hub a2, keeps the stock-mover B in place upon said hub a, and also the lever D in place upon the hub of the stock-mover.
H are stocks fitted to slide in radial slots in the face-plate A, and upon the rear of each stock there are teeth b,entering a volute groove formed in the face of the stoek-1noverB. The tools g, in the form of grooved rolls for acting upon the watch-case blank, are mounted 1n jaws G upon stems supported in the stocks H, and there are springs around said stems aeting between the jaws and the stocks to allow the rolls to yield.
It will now be apparent upon reference to Figs. 2, 3, and 4 that by moving the lever D' back and forth the stock-mover D will be rotated through the pawl E and teeth B, and that the volute groove in B will act upon the teeth of the stocks II and cause said stocks and their rolls to be gradually moved toward the centerl ofthe face-plate, and that said rolls willgradually roll over the edge of the metal blank; and finally give it the same sectional shape as the sectional shape of the groove of the rolls, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
It is preferable thatthe heads L' la should be C) of such a size as to clamp nearly all of the surface of the blank not acted upon by the rolls,
so as to keep flat that part of the blank; and the head 7c Inay form a stop to limit the oper ation of the rolls.

To remove the blank from between the heads it is rstnecessary to swing the pawl E to the position shown by dotted linesin Fig. 3. Then the lever D is moved back and forth, which rotates the stock-mover B in the reverse direction to thatbefore described, and said stockmover forces the stocks H away from the iinished blank. When said rolls are clear of the finished blank, the nuts N N are rotated in the direction to draw the shafts J J' and their respective heads away from each other sufficient for the removal of the blank. The blank is now placed in the female die R and the male die Q q brought down to give the proper shape to the watch-case; but my invention docs not relate to this stamping operation.
I claim as my invention-e 1. The combination, with the shafts J J', heads k k', and bearings for said shafls, of the face-plate A, secured to one of said bearings, the stock-mover B upon a tubular portion of Aand having a circular range of teeth and a volute groove, the lever D', and pawl E, the
stocks H, fitted to slidein the face-plate A, and having teeth entering the volute on B, and the rolls g, mounted in said stocks H, substantially as and for the purposes specified. f
2. The shafts J J upon the same axial line, bearings for said shafts, heads upon the inner ends of said shafts, screws O O, and nuts NN', for moving said shafts endwise, .in combination with the face-plate secured to one of thebear-v ings, the stockmover B,with its circular range of teeth and volute groove, the lever D', and pawlE, the stocks H, fitted to slide in the faceplate A, and having teeth entering the volute on B, and the rolls g, mounted on said stocks H, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the two clampingheads for clamping and rotatingI the sheetmetal watch-case blank, of rolls grooved to correspond to the turned -over edge of the metal, stocks to carry the rolls, and mechanism for moving the rollers simultaneously toward or away from the revolving blank, substantially as set forth.
