O SOURCE 0% PRESSURE FIG-3 4 W INVENTORS WEB OF JURGEN SCHLUNKE MATERIAL DIETER JUNK SMOOTHING RULER FOR PAPER GLAZING CALENDERS The present invention relates to a smoothing ruler for paper glazing calenders, the location of which ruler is adjustable in a direction transverse to its longitudinal extension by means of a plurality of pressure members which are vertically movable in a supporting beam which is pivotally connected to said smoothing ruler, while said pressure members are arranged along a line and have their end faces pressed against the surface of said smoothing ruler at variable pressure.
In order to assure a fold-free movement of the paper webs in calenders, frequently stationary guiding means with variable adjustable curvature or bending line are required. To this end, it is known to employ a so-called smoothing ruler which is pivotally arranged below a supporting beam and which by means of a plurality of spindles joumaled in the supporting beam as control members can be bent over its length within the width of the goods and in conformity with the respective requirement in order to smooth out any folds or creases in the paper web moving thereover. The control spindles joumaled in the supporting beam are uniformly distributed over the length of the smoothing ruler and by adjusting one or more control spindles will, within a certain range of the smoothing ruler, permit a more or less considerable locally limited bending of the said ruler for smoothing out any creases in the paper web passing over the smoothing ruler.
The handling of the heretofore known control device for the position of the smoothing ruler which latter may have the shape of a pipe, pipe segment, or a round bar, by means of the control spindles is rather awkward and time consuming. As soon as the operator of the calender discovers the formation of a crease in the paper web passing through the calender, he has, as a rule, to climb on an elevated platform from which the spindle control device is accessible. Sometimes it may even happen that the calender which prior to the adjustment of the smoothing ruler has expediently been stopped has, after it has started again, to be stopped in order to return the smoothing ruler to its normal position after it has performed a smoothing action. When the calender during the adjustment of the smoothing ruler continues its operation, naturally considerable time passes by which the operator requires in order to obtain the adjusting direction for the smoothing ruler. The paper material which during this time passes over the smoothing ruler while forming creases cannot be smoothed out, and therefore becomes practically unusable.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide an improvement of the control device for a smoothing ruler on paper glazing calenders, which will permit a simple and fast adjustment of the location of the smoothing ruler in order within a minimum of time to be able to smooth out creases formed in the paper web without the necessity on the part of the operator to leave his control stand or to stop the calender.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more clearly from the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 illustrates a front view partially sectioned of an arrangement according to the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a cross section taken along the line ll-ll of FIG. 1.
F l6. 3 is a cross section of an alternate arrangement.
The smoothing ruler according to the invention is characterized primarily in that the pressure members for adjusting the position of the smoothing ruler are designed as pistons which are adapted to be remote controlled on or in a carrier beam. Preferably two or more pistons may be grouped together in order jointly to effect a pneumatic or hydraulic actuation of the smoothing ruler.
By replacing the heretofore customary and manually operable mechanical control spindles by pneumatically or hydraulically operable pistons, the operator will be in a position to carry out the adjustment of the smoothing ruler in the desired section by remote control from his control stand. ln other words, the operator need not leave his place whenever an adthe formation of the crease or creases can be efl'ected in a minimum of time by remote control after the respective crease or creases are smoothed out.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the smoothing ruler l is passed over the web 2 of the goods 'andis, by means of pivots or joints 3, linked to the supporting beam 4. The supporting beam 4 is rotatably or pivotally joumalled in bearings The supporting beam 4 is, according to the design, shown in FIG. 1 subdivided in three chambers 6 which, through conduits 7, are adapted independently of each other to be actuated by a gaseous or liquid pressure medium. The pressure medium is furnished by a source of pressure 8 and is by pressure controls 9 distributed over the individual conduits 7 while the pressure in said conduits is indicated by pressure gauges In the pressure chamber 6 of the supporting beam 4, four pressure pistons 11 each are combined to form a unit, and the pressure pistons of each unit are adapted to be moved simultaneously when the pressure in the respective pressure chamber 6 increases or decreases. Those end faces of the pressure pistons 11 which protrude from the supporting beams 4 are located in a row adjacent to each other on the surface of the smoothing ruler l. The respective pressure pistons 11 combined to a unit in a pressure chamber 6 are by increasing the pressure or lowering the same actuated in the pressure chamber 6 together for deforming the smoothing ruler l therebelow. v
When a crease forms in the paper web 2 which is passed over the smoothing ruler 1, either a group of pressure pistons 11 may be actuated by applying pressure in the respective pressure chamber 6 of the supporting beam 4', but it is also possible under certain circumstances to actuate all three pressure piston units for an adjustment of the position of the smoothing ruler 1. if, for instance, the smoothing ruler l is to be bent in the center, the intermediate pressure chamber 6 may be subjected to increased pressure whereby the intermediate piston group will-exert pressure upon and bend the smoothing ruler l. Simultaneously, the two pressure chambers 6 may at the ends of the supporting beam 4 be subjected to a lower pressure so that the pressure pistons l 1 arranged therein or the corresponding regions of the smoothing ruler 1 will be relieved and the bending of the ruler 1 will be facilitated.
Instead of the specific design of the smoothing ruler as shown in the drawing, also another group-wise or individual actuation of the pressure piston 11 maybe provided. Furthermore, it is possible instead of arranging the pressure pistons 11 in the supporting beam 4 as illustrated, to arrange said pressure pistons 11 in separate cylinders flanged onto the supporting beam 4.
Advantageously, the end faces of said pressure pistons 11 loosely engage the surface of the smoothing ruler 1. However, it is also possible to provide a fixed connection for instance, a joint connection between pressure piston l l and the smoothing ruler l.
The smoothing ruler 1 may, in a manner known per se, have a round of semiround profile or may consist of a'pipe, pipe segment, or another round bar.
It is, of course, to be understood that the present invention is, by no means, limited to the particular showing in the drawing, and the specific description set forth above, but also comprises any modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
