CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,713, dated July 19, 188?.
Application filed May 2, 1387. Serial No. 53363 35. (No 1u odel.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JORDAN CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Penn Run, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in earcouplings; and itconsists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is an end elevation of aportion of a car provided with my improved coupling. Fig. 2is alongitudt nal vertical section showing two cars coupled, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A des' ignates the end ofa car, andBtheeoupling-supporting block secured to the bottom of the same. This coupling-supporting block is provided in its upper side with the longitudinal recess 1), and the arrow-head coupling-link 0 works in the said recess. This recess does not extend to the rear side or edge of the block B, but terminates at a point in advance of the same. A slot, D, extends from the rear end of the recess to the rear edge of the block, and a link, E, plays in this slot. The forward end of the link E engages the rear end of the coupling'link, and its rear end is provided with a stop, 6, between which and the rear side of the block B a spring, F, is coiled around the said link E. This coiled spring serves to hold the coupling-link against withdrawal, and at the same time allows it sufficient play to operate easily and readily.
In order to hold the coupling-link in the recess, I provide a strongleaf-spring, G, which is secured at one end to the upper side of the coupling-supporting block and to one side of the couplinglink. From its fixed end this leaf-spring G extends transversely over the coupling-link and bears on the upper side of the same. The barbs c of the arrow-head of the coupling-link are arranged on the upper and lower sides of the link, and to prevent lateral play of the links upon one another, and the consequent uncoupling of the ears, I secure to each link, justiu rear of the arrowhead,a U shaped guard, H, the arms of which extend up on the opposite sides of thelink, as clearly shown.
I designates an angle-lever pivoted on the end of the coupling-supporting block, and having its shorter arm bearing against the under side of the coupling-link, and its longer arm extending upward and serving as an opcrating-handle.
The operation of my coupling is obvious. As the'cars come together one of the links will ride up over the other, and the barbs of the two arrow-heads will engage, as shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to uncouple, the lever I is turned so as to raise the upper coupling, thereby disengaging the links, as will be readily understood.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a coupling which is simple in construction and eflicicnt and automatic in operation, and which obviates the necessity of the brakeman going between the ears.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a car-coupling, an arrow-head coupling-link having a U-shaped guard secured thereto in rear of the arrow-head, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the ear, of the supportingblock secured to the under side of the car, the link working in said block, and a bent lever pivoted on the end of the car and having one arm extending under the link and bearing against the under side of the same, substantially as specified.
